View Full Version : Wet Sanding: Plain water, or water + "soap"?

As the title say, how wet sanding is done, with water and lubricant ("soap") or it is done with plain water? I am asking because I've "heard" of people using water and soap, and at the same time as I am looking at Wet Wedge (that I am considering getting) videos I see everybody is using just plain water.

Thank you in advance!

you can use either. what are you wet sanding, primer or paint? when sanding primer your paper can get clogged up very fast, so if you use soap it helps keep the sandpaper clean longer. I've never had a problem with paint(clear coat) clogging up my sandpaper, so i just use plain water. I wouldnt suggest using dish soap while sanded on a freshly painted car because as you can find on these forums, the paint needs to breathe and if you use dish soap it wont allow it to do that.

A little soap in the water helps to,

Lubricate the surface
Prevent your sanding paper from clogging up
Enable particles to rinse more freely off the surface

Meguiar's has been offering a special wet-sanding soap for about 30 plus years, use just a little in your bucket, like a capful or two for about 3-4 gallons.

This is a low sudsing soap that is completely safe for all fresh paint. By the way, all of our car wash solutions are safe for fresh paint. (Less than 30 days old).

A little soap in the water helps too
Thank you Mike! I assumed soap in water used to wet area as I am working would be beneficial but I can not do that with Wet Wedge, right?

...I assumed soap in water used to wet area as I am working would be beneficial but I can not do that with Wet Wedge, right?I always figured that if I got a WetWedge I’d try to rig up a water source with soap instead of just running it off the tap. Maybe you could use a pump sprayer tank, or a dilution gun or something like that.

I used a 0.5 gallon bug sprayer. The hose on the WetWedge has the same ID tubing as the sprayer, so it fits. You probably want to find a way to clamp it as well.

I did this to demo the WetWedge at NACE where we didn't have access to a water spigot. You could fill it with soap water solution if you wanted to.

Not the best pix but it was quick and dirty. I had brought this sprayer to wash my car while in Vegas. It worked fine for the WetWedge however there were a couple times where too much pressure caused the hose to come off and squirt nearby booths---who weren't too happy. Thus my suggestion for a hose clamp. =)

That looks like a bug sprayer! The guys in the other booths probably thought they were getting insecticide on their rides LOL! Insecticide = very bad for paint!

Thank you guys!

Richard, how long a gallon would last?

Hah the container was hidden underneath a table. There were no "rides" nearby. Just a couple of loud mouthed ladies who were mad that we got water on them. The setup was a spur of the moment idea. Something I had in the back of my mind, but hadn't tried it yet.

Well the half gallon lasted for quite a few demos, but I wouldn't want to do any real work with it. You probably will want a bit more than gallon, but it depends on what flow rate you set--if it's a trickle, it will last longer obviously. I really can't say, you just got to try it.

Pretty interesting product. I noticed the videos were powered by SCG.

Is this endorsed or recommended by Meguiar's?

There is no relationship between SCG and Meguiar's in any way shape or form. As far as I know Meguiar's does not endorse the WetWedge product.

Hmmm, then I would definitely want easier and simpler way of adding soap to water. Making work better and easier is whole point behind Wet Wedge. Otherwise whole "add solution - pump - work - pump some more - work some more - add more solution" puts it back to square one of what inventor wanted to avoid.
