Extreme Makeover - 1970 Corvette Roadster

Actually, it more of a, Not-So-Extreme Makeover, because this Corvette has a fairly new paint job and the owner has been taking very good care of it.

While in the above pictures the finish appears to be flawless, in real life, fine swirls are present. Before starting the makeover, we will capture the true appearance of the finish and post the pictures here.

The owner is going to enter this Corvette in a car show in approximately 2-weeks. So our goal will be to take his car's finish to it's Maximum potential! using the Meguiar's paint polishing system.

The makeover will start at approximately 10:00 am on Thursday, August 5th at Meguiar's in Irvine. This is an open invitation to anyone in the area that would like to come down and watch and possibly lend a helping hand in the transformation.

If you would like to attend, please sign-up by replying to this thread.

I'm gonna take the day off of work and come down mike. I'll also bring the suburban down. If we have time to get to it we do, if we don't we don't. I'd like to help you with this and also see the man work his magic on black :)

Originally I thought this was to start at 5:00p.m. I can't make it at 10:00. But I can make it a little later. So, count me in; I should be there early afternoon, maybe 1:00-ish.

Me too!!! I'm just a little concerned about traffic, though.....wondering how early I should leave to be there @ 10:00AM. Since I'm coming from the Thousand Oaks area, I've got an 85 mile drive on the 101 to the 405. That's just gotta be terrible in the morning....any suggestions?

Hi Mark,

I've driven the 101 before on a Friday afternoon and it was horrible!

I'm not sure how it will be on a Thursday morning, but I'll take a stab at it...

Horrible!

Hopefully someone with more years in California than I will chime in. I'm planning on leaving the house at 5:30am and being in the office at 7:30am, if you want to leave in time to get here that early, you might be able to avoid some of the worst stuff.

I find in California, you either have to leave real early or wait till the majority of folks have suffered through the traffic and arrived to work and then drive.

Hi Mike,

Hmmm, my choices are SO appealing!! :D Oh well, I'll try to decide whether to leave REALLY early, and miss some of the traffic (and miss some sleep, too), or leave sorta early and slog thru the quagmire. Either way, I'll try my best to be there at, or before, 10:00AM. See you then!!

Normally i'd say avoid both of those freeways and take the 134 to the 210 then the 57 down into the beach. However I've heard nothing but bad news about the 210 since they opened it up all the way to riverside. Since i don't live in pasadena and don't commute on it anymore I don't know the truth and I have a feeling you'd be going against the traffic since I don't think many people commute OUT to riverside for work

Check www.sigalert.com for traffic info to help find a better route.

There are 3 freeways I AVOID out here as much as I can. The 5, 405, and the 101

after looking at the sig alert map more and thinking about it, you want to avoid the 405 like the plaque. I'd give the 101-134-210 to the 57 south a try. The 57 will end into the 5 and then you'll take the 5 for a mile or two until you hit the 55.

Thanks for the route hints! The section of the 101 between the 405 & 5 can be pretty hairy......I may take the 118 - 210 - 57, and then on to the 5 - 55. Kind of a long route, but probably faster. Thanks again!!

WHATS TAKING SO LONG FOR THURS TO GET HERE??

LOL!

Sorry about that. We detailed two 33 foot RVs yesterday and put in over 11 hours of detailing today. I guess I am a little out of it.

it happens, guess this means we need to do back ups more frequently. What a shame :(

Mike Phillips

Just to let everyone know, Meguiar's Online is usually backed up every night. This was a coincidence that the same weekend we were attacked, David took the weekend off to be with his family out of town.

Everyone needs a break from their job. It's frustrating to lose posts and pictures especially when you're involved with the events that took place. I know I'm frustrated and now have to try to catch up.

But it is just car wax... We will recover, and we will become stronger because we will learn how to better safeguard against people with too much time on their hands.

Hey Mike,

Sorry to hear all your hard work was wiped out....that's TERRIBLE!! The makeover thread was looking very nice, with great pics and narration. Such a shame!!

I just wanted to thank you (again), Mike, for your time, experience and knowledge. You've given me the courage to tackle paint care using the proper tools and techniques. I also wanted to thank Meguiar's for letting us use the facilites, tools and products. And I'd like to thank the Extreme Makover Team for a great and educational day. It was fun to hang out with a car-crazy bunch for the day.

BTW, my drive home was uneventful....traffic wasn't too bad, and I mangaged to stay awake for the entire time!!:D

That's good to hear, because we just polished your Corvette out to the hilt, my imagination played out a doomsday scenario for your ride home. I'm glad you and your car arrived home safely!

Are you going to be ready for the car show this weekend?

Mike

p.s.

I will recreate the thread, it was too good to let go...

Hey Mike,

I'm all ready to go to the Concorso Italiano. I had a mechanical malfunction yesterday, but I took care of it (that was scary). I'll be packing my NXT, MF towels, glass cleaner, etc., to get the car prepped after the long drive up. I can't wait.....should be lots of fun!!

I hope you have the time to post the pics from that day.....Scott's 'Burb was absolutely amazing, and the results were fantastic!! His truck is a gleaming beauty!!
