I was skeptical (as usual) of the need for this detailing item. I thought I was doing ok without it. I mean I use the 2 bucket method to wash. Actually 3 bucket, can't forget the wheel and tire bucket. What more do I need. Well it's the grit guard. I was shocked at how much grit remained in my wash bucket after washing. That's with 2 buckets (changing out rinse bucket several times) and the grit guard. Can't imagine washing without it now.

When someone suggests the grit guard, don't write it off as some money making gizmo, it's worth money.

:iagree:

I have the same feeling... a few months ago I ordered few products from Meguiars and thought lets give it a try, if I don't like it put it on ebay. It was worth EVERY penny works like a charm.

I see the ones at walmart (not grit guard but a look alike) if you look at the grid at walmart you will see there is places for the dirt to collect in the "V" shaped areas and stay in the wash mit area where the grit guard does not have ant places to collect the dirt. Ok, ok enough.... What I am saying stick with the original Grit Guard they work!

Hi scrub,

I'm glad you like yours.

:bigups :bigups :bigups

After using this one time, I knew I would never want to be without it. I show it, and encourage all of the people who attend our clinics on Saturdays to invest in one, and I promise them, they won't be sorry.

as long as you dont let your washing mit or spong sink to the bottom of the bucket shouldn't you get the same results?
just a thought.

Kind of. The grit guard also provides a place to scrub the wash mitt against in the event grit and sand is picked up in the mitt. The agitation against the guard will help release the sand.

Both if you have them. You can even double them up for even more room betwen the bottom of the bucket and the area your mitt is dipped into.

I just bought 2 grit guard inserts (shipping on their way to my house) and are you sayin I should get 2 more to be extra extra safe when washing a dirty truck?

I dunno if you need four of them.. 2 certainly works. It is like I think the car isnt 'too' dirty, but I still wash it, and then I dump out the bucket of rinse water afterwards, and still have to rinse sand out of the bottom. Dont know where it all comes from.

Just a quick stupid question, but does anyone know the correct way to insert the grit guard in the bucket. The picture is hard to tell which way is up and which is the bottom? Screen facing the bottom of the bucket, or at the top?

Thanks...

I've yet to use one, but the screen looks to be facing up to me.

It would have to be up in order to wipe a wash mitt against it.

you will be able to tell when you get it. if you put it in the wrong way you won't be able to use it, as the grit guard will be upside down.

You will be able to tell right away, but just in case, the screen part will be on top, and the baffles on the bottom to keep your mit and inch or two off the bottom of the bucket.

I just got mine in the mail today and here's a stupid question for you but just wondering... I have 2 standard size 5 gallon buckets and when I put them in they fit really snug considering I have to press them in there....but my question is... are they pretty durable? I'm kinda afraid of breaking one of the 4 legs off one if I pressed it in to hard.

Seems pretty durable... I mean, even if it breaks, it can be glued back. If you can tell where is catching, you can even shave it back a little.

Mike,

Where can I buy the bucket/dolly setup you have in the pic? I can't find it in the E-store

To get the dolly you have to go to the Grit Guard website because at this time we only offer the grit guard itself, not the dolly...

http://www.gritguard.com/catalog/index.php

I have one of these for washing cars in which the finish is in excellent condition and I want to use the two-bucket method...

Dual Bucket System (http://www.gritguard.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=60&osCsid=413a031a0a2e42a268be63c21c9e0416
)

I also have the single dolly/bucket system. For example I use the single bucket/dolly system for washing my old Blazer as the paint job is really not that nice as it's a $800.00 Maaco paint job. For the Pilot however, because it's black and I keep it polished up, I use the two-bucket system when I wash it. The two bucket system is harder to use and takes longer, so anyone reading this be forewarned. If you have a car in which you have painstakingly removed all of the swirls and scratches however, you may find the extra effort worthwhile.

Thanks Mike, I ordered a few. Shipped today evidently.

I do have a question though. Does the padded seat fit directly on the dolly as well? Or does it only fit on the buckets? Then reason I ask is I was thinking it would be nice to get down that low for the wheel work and lower stuff. I ordered the 3.5 Gal bucket just in case but am hoping the seat fits directly on the dolly.

I don't know but that's a good question, I could go out into the garage and hunt down the pads and try your idea out as I never thought about it before.

hehe, I'll be finding out the weeked anyway. I was considering buying a low profile dolly for this but will wait till I get my system and see. Even if it can't I am sure I can mod up something if need be.

Just a couple thoughts.... Grit Guard is the way to go!

I used my fathers "Black Magic Grit-Trap Wash Bucket" it did the job but... the "Grit-Trap" floats?!?! The floating grit-trap makes it very difficult to dip your mitt in and out of the bucket, you have to keep knocking it to the bottom every time you dip the mitt. It seemed as it was supposed to "lock" in to the bottom of the bucket but just as you would get it to stick to the bottom you dip your mitt in the water and the grit-trap floated back up.

Again the Grit Guard it the way to go, its more versatile, you can move it to just about any bucket allowing for more or less water holding ability and it doesn't float! So anyone trying to decide between the two this should help.

It looks like the pad goes on the lid on the bucket. So the question would be, does the lid fit on the dolly. If it does, you put the pad on top of the lid on the dolly.
