Blocks or Unigrit papers

Hi,
I was thinking about trying my hand at Wet Sanding on either an old car or fender from the Junkyard and was curious what the main differences were in the Sanding Blocks and the Unigrit papers.

Would I need to soak the blocks like the papers as well? Also why would I prefer one over the other (blocks vs. papers)

Hi Tom,

The Sanding Blocks are designed for above surface paint imperfections such as; runs, sags, and drips. The Finishing Papers, on the other hand, are for orange peel, acid rain, scratches etc..To keep it simple, above surface imperfections use the block, below surface imperfections, use the papers.

Most of the time if you are going to be "wet sanding" a panel for better appearance, the papers are the way to go. Keep in mind, always use the least aggressive paper possible to do the job.

Have you seen our video on "How to Remove Paint Defects?" We If you haven't, we would recommend it...This is a great video that shows you the ropes on this process of wet sanding / color sanding....

Definitely get the video. It's great.

The finishing papers are, well, papers. They're flexible, and when used with the E-7200 Sanding Backing Pad (http://meguiars.com/estore/product_detailpage.cfm?product=Sanding-Backing-Pad&sku=E-72) conform nicely to the surface contour and give even pressure.

The blocks are, uh, blocks. If you've ever used soft foam sanding pads or Sandflex rubber sanding blocks they ain't like that. Unigrit blocks are rigid. They're great for grinding raised defects flush.

Thanks for the reply's, I do have the video but it doesn't cover the blocks, that's what I was curious about them. I am excited about seeing what I can do on a test panel and just wanted to know what I should order to start off with.

Hi Tom,

I use the sanding blocks for knocking down touch-up paint. The rigid block makes quick and accurate work of the touch-up thereby reducing any extra buffing with the rotary on that spot!! :xyxthumbs


Meguiar's Unigrit Sanding Papers are the BEST I have ever used, PERIOD!!! Just make sure to soak the papers for a couple of hours in a bucket of water with a couple of squirts of #00 Hi Tech Wash in the water. Also, fill a spray bottle with water and a squirt of #00. :)
