Face shield coating

I'm removing raised lettering and scratches from a face shield (bike helmet), and it has some kind of coating. Is the only way to go now to sand it all off and polish? I was hoping I didn't have to sand it all.

Is it a big deal to remove this coating? Will it fog up and scratch easily now?

If you remove the coating off the face shield, it will never look the same and/or it will possibly not look good, you may also not be able to see through it easily.

If this is lexan, you will find it very difficult to work with as it is very hard and does not lend itself well to polishing. The way the term polishing is used here means to remove small particles of the surface in an effort to level or smooth out the surface.

How much does a new face shield cost and can you bet one without the lettering.

What is the best way to remove scratches from 6mm thick 7'X4' Lexan sheets?

If I could find a new shield it would take long enough and cost enough that it wouldn't be worth it.

I sanded out the letters and buffed with #83 and a rotary. It left swirl marks that #17 wouldn't touch, so I'm going to try #3 with the rotary and then #17, is that a good idea? It looks a lot better even with the light swirls.
