PlastX on Instrument Cluster

I used Meguiar's PlastX for the first time on my 2004 Jepp Liberty instrument cluster plexiglass and was very surprised. I had tried a lot of other products. It worked a miracle.

if you dont' mind me asking, what happened that it got so dirty? is that dust? dirt? scuff marks? do you know what caused it?
