Please post your questions to our discussion forum (http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7270) ;)

I feel bad for posting this, but each day I have people who have discovered our forum, read through it, and then decide to personally e-mail me their questions.

While I would love to answer everyone's questions via e-mail, it defeats the entire purpose of the forum. Besides that, if I answer questions via e-mail, only one set of eyes see the answers. If I answer questions via the forum, potentially hundreds, even thousands of people can benefit from the questions and answers. This is a better way to leverage everyone's time and my typing.

I truly appreciate the trust people place in Meguiar's name and the time and effort taken they take to write an e-mail with their questions, but due to the time it takes to think-out and write specific answers to a wide spectrum of questions, often times that include formatting, (all hand coded, for example the word formatting has four code tags to make it appear bold, italic, underlined and darkblue), as well as including click-able links with pictures, it is impossible to try to answer questions both on the forum and via e-mail. Since the forum is the best venue for asking and receiving answers, please if at all possible, post your questions to our discussion forum.

Most questions can be asked in the Detailing 101 Forum.

Detailing 101 (http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=22)

Thought I would share this new "Form Letter" I use now for questions sent to me via e-mail. If you're reading this and you have received this in an e-mail reply from myself, I would like to encourage you to register with our forum and please post your questions to the forum.

Click here to Register" (http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/register.php?s=)

If you're unsure where to post your questions, then click the below link and post them in the Detailing 101 Forum.

Detailing 101 Forum (http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=22)

Here's the form letter I use when I receive an e-mail with questions that should be posted to our forum...

You know I really appreciate it when people take the time to send me a letter asking me for advice and if and when they do I always take the time to reply and below you find my answers and suggestions to your questions. (See below

However, please understand that because the forum is open to the public for all to read, (You cannot post until you register and become a member), that a lot of people will read the information and then instead of registering with the forum and asking their questions on the forum, they will simply locate my e-mail address and send their questions to me via e-mail.

If you step back and think about this for a moment, I think you'll understand that it's all about "Typing Time". If someone posts their questions to the forum, chances are very good that others have the same types of questions; then when I answer them on the forum, many eyes can benefit from the replies I type. If I type up answers in an e-mail, then only one set of eyes benefit from the typing time.

This has become such a repeated e-mail that I finally, (against my will), posted this to the TOP of the forum homepage.

Here's the link to the actual link to the thread...

Please post questions to the forum... (http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7270) ;)

Here you can see where the link is placed on the forum homepage

I would like to thank everyone that reads this and then registers with our forum and asks their questions on the forum instead of an e-mail.

It's cool... I send a few e-mails out each day with the link to this thread...

Right now my finger tips actually hurt on my right hand from typing so much today and last night. I'll be in meetings on Wednesday and of course at Open Garage Wednesday Night so this gives me a good break away from the keyboard.

Hi Gary,

Welcome to Meguiar's Online! :wavey

Your question would have probably got more attention and would have probably been answered had it been posted in a forum for questions on detailing like this one,

Detailing 101 (http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=22)

In a nutshell, repeated washing of any surface or material will usually tend to dry it out... What you want to do is after you wash it is to condition and protect it with a quality product formulated for the surface or material you're working on.

Check this one out...

Hi browneyes,

Welcome to Meguiar's Online! :welcome

I know when you first join a forum that it can be kind of confusing, but there are actual specific forums for questions like yours. The thread you have just replied to is a thread that asks people to post their question to the forum instead of sending them to me via e-mail for the reasons outlined in the first post of this thread. It's not actually the place to ask your questions. :)

Click on the link below and it will take you to the Detailing 101 forum which is the perfect place to copy and paste your question by clicking on the New Topic button in the upper right hand corner of the page.

Here's the link to the Detailing 101 Forum

http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=22

By the way, you can find the entire list of different types of forums by clicking on the word Forums which is the first text link on the horizontal green navigation bar that runs across the top of each page.

Mike I'm guilty as charged. Must be a guy thing , act first then read instructions. Sent PM and then read intro. My PM asked if Meguair's was going to have its booth at this years Barrett Jackson ? Flying to LA the weekend before the auction for a little sightseeing and driving to scottsdale mid-week. Any hints on any must see places or car related events in or around LA? Have been told to check out the petterson museum but I'm open for suggestions.

Recently purchased '07 Corvette Convertible (first one) in Silver and interested in knowing what products to use on exterior and interior. Vehicle is garaged during winter months, but want to begin with using all the right products to maintain show room finish.

Sorry for the direct email... I just wasn't sure where to post my question...

Where can I get one of those xenon lights for seeing the swirls... I see Joe (Superior Shine) uses it regularily and noticed you appearing to use one at one of the clinics...

Is there an online source?

Again my apologies for not following the rules... I'm the type that usually learns the hard way, at least so my wife says.

Hi Bill! If you are talking about the hand held Xenon light you can just make a search for Brinkmann Maxfire Lights or just Brinkmann. There is one at Amazon for $30, but I believe if you look really hard or get it from your local store you can get it for as low as $20.

If these are "Tracers", then you might try saning just the individual scratch out using a piece of sanding paper the size of a postage stamp and then buff out these sanding marks. This way you won't have to re-sand the entire truck.

Or you could re-compound the entire truck.

both options are a lot of work.

Also, check this thread out as it discusses this topic and the guy asking the questions is having the same problem as you're having and actually lives in the same country that you live in. What a coincidence!

Tracers or Swirls? Which one? (http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18794)

I bought a tube of Meguire scartchX but still hesitate to apply it to affected area on this new car.I'm affraid since the car is still new and may result in patches on trying to remove these light swirls .I'm also not familiar with these products. Can you give me some advises.

Hi Antoine,

Welcome to Meguiar's Online! :wavey

I know it can be confusing when you first joining a forum to know what to do or where to post a question, in the future it's best to start your own thread and post your questions in the

Detailing 101 Forum (http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=22)

As this is a thread asking people to post their questions to the forum and not send them to me in an e-mail. No big deal, it's just I can't move your post in this already established thread to the Detailing 101 forum.

Yes. The first thing you have to do is to stop letting other people wash your car.

No one will ever care about your car as much as you will. The exceptions would be a few Professional Detailers scattered around the country and for these guys you'll have to pay top price even for a car wash.

Even the places like this,

100% Hand Car Wash

Can't be trusted because just because they wash your car by hand doesn't mean they're using a clean, high quality wash mitt. What are the chances that the wash mitts they use have been dropped on the ground? You know they use these mitts all day long, all week long, all month long.

Do you think they stop the wash process and get a new mitt every time they drop it? The answer is no, they pick it up and keep moving along.

Do you think that when you pull in they break out the new mitts, change their wash bucket water and use the high quality soap? Or do they just keep using the same mitt and wash water they used to wash the truck the came in before you?

Do you think they care that your car is brand new and special to you? Do they know you? How much do you think they are paid to wash cars? Is that enough to also make them care?

Maybe the first day or two...

Nope, if you don't want swirls in your car's finish you either have to search out a Professional Detailer that offers high quality car washing or take ownership of the process yourself.

Here's some stuff we've written about clear coat paint, the paint on your car that like so many people that have come before you, we're here to educate you about this thin, delicate film.

Clear coats finishes are what we call Scratch-Sensitive, that is although most clear coat paints are much harder than traditional single-stage paints, they still scratch very easily and because there is a solid color coat under the clear layer of paint, the swirls in the clear coat finish are very easy for our eyes to see.

These appearance of these unsightly swirls tends to bother serious enthusiasts and frustrate everyone when they try to remove them because of the "Paint Hardness Factor" common to most clear coats paints.

In a nutshell, the harder the paint, the more difficult it will be for you and I to remove the swirls and scratches, especially by hand because removing swirls and scratches, (below surface defects), means removing paint, more specifically, it means removing the upper layer of paint in an effort to level the entire surface until the highest or uppermost surface is level with the lowest depths of all the swirls and scratches. Because clear coat paints tend to be harder, not softer than traditional paints, removing small particles of paint with some type of paint cleaner or cleaner wax is difficult, even if you use the right technique and even if you're good at doing this, it's still a tough job.

As for removing the swirls in the finish of your BMW, there are a lot of threads on this topic in these two forums,

Hot Topics (http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=80)

Meguiar's How-To Articles (http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=33)

If you don't have a lot of experience applying chemicals to your car's paint and then properly working them to get the results you're hoping for then taking ScratchX to your car's black paint can seem a little daunting, it's not as bad as you think.

The most important thing is to work clean, that is the car must be washed and clean before starting.
Work in the shade on a cool surface
Work a small section at a time, about a foot squared
Apply the product to your applicator pad then spread it out and then work it against the paint using about 8-15 pounds of pressure and with a fairly fast hand movement. Clear coat paints tend to be hard and simply wiping a product on and then wiping the product off will do nothing. You have to put some passion behind the pad.
After you work the product for a about a minute, stop and wipe the excess product off using a clean, microfiber polishing cloth and inspect.
If it looks good or better then continue around the car overlapping into the previously worked section.
If it looks worse, stop and be thankful you only worked a small area and come back here and post your results. The product works great, usually when there's a problem it has to do with how it's being applied not the chemical itself.

Another option would be to just wash and wax the car and live with it as dealing with swirls on clear coat finishes will alway be a problem and a challenge. Many people after owning a black car and not being into the "Detail Thing", will next purchase a white or silver metallic car so it's harder to see the swirls. (They're going to still be in the paint you just can't see them as easy).

If you're not going to take ownership of the washing process, or search out a quality place or person to wash the car for you then the next best thing you can do is either learn to live with the swirls or use a wax like NXT Tech Wax which has the ability to eliminate fine swirls and restore a showroom appearance to the paint.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but remember it's now our fault the car manufactures have all switched to clear coat paint technology, we just do our best to make products that enable you to be effective when you work on these types of paint.

The fun paints, or the easy to work on paints are the old-fashioned single stage paints like lacquer and enamel, the type of paints that came on cars in the 1950's and 1960's and even the early 1970's.

About 3.5 years ago, I bought a new set of Buick style Ralley wheels (black and chrome) for my '71 Buick. The car has not been a daily driver, I exercise it at least 1-to-4 times per month (depending on the weahter), except during Winter; it is garaged; my maint. regimen has included the use of Meguiar's products (such as Meguiar's "Nxt generation All Metal Polysh), and it has won trophies/awards at car shows; so of course I had thought the wheels were ok too, since they would be key to helping the car be such an award-winner. However, little "rust dots" have appeared on the outer half of the chrome on the wheel rims; not like "a coat of polka-dots", but "here & there" around the rims; and you almost have to sit down and look for them, but they are there, so they can be found. Therefore, I must ask how do I remove those "rust dots" from the chrome on those wheel rims, or is it already too late for anything short of a "professional"?

Just had a gentlemen e-mail me the below

If you want can you give me the complete steps to follow beginning with the shampoo and all the steps i need to use to make my car beautiful.

While we would love to type up a book and e-mail it to people, the entire idea behind a public discussion forum and the power of the discussion forum is if a person posts their question on the forum, we can type up an answer and not only can they see it and learn from it, but there will be hundreds of people in the future, (likely thousands), that will have the same question and now... the benefit of the answer.

We'll e-mail him some links, but there is only so much "Typing Time" in each day that typing answers via e-mail is not a good leverage of time.

I hope I'm doing this right.
What is a good way to hand wash a car and wax/ polish it with minimal damage(swirls) to a single stage paint. Is Dawn dish soap o.k.? Turtle Wax? I'm serious. I've never had a car that I cared about until I got my 71 Dart Swinger painted Plumb Crazy purple.

But, to help start you off, here are some basic links that you should read to start getting the feel for Meguais products and techniques. And we'll look forward to your new thread, and maybe some pictues of your plumb crazy Dart.

The problem with this is only one set of eyeballs sees the answer and that's not necessarily a bad thing but if you think about how much "Typing Time" we have each day, the best use of our time is typing answers where hundreds of eyeballs can see the answers.

It's just a better use or leverage of our typing time for the big pictures; that's because if you have a questions it's highly likely someone else has the same question but is afraid to ask it.

So public questions and public answers help more people and maximize our typing time...

Have to go soak my fingertips in some warm water... :D

(can't answer e-mails or PM's when working with 37 people in a garage)

Then on Sunday we like to try to take a day off to spend with our family, especially if we're gone the majority of the day on Saturday.

And now on Monday we start reading the e-mail and PM's that have piled up since Friday and then we "Bump" this thread...

Can't spend time "Typing" out how-to books in PM's and E-mails. It's just not the best way to prioritize our time because the forum is the right place for people to ask questions.

Please post your questions to the forum. If you're not sure which category to post your questions then post them in Detailing 101

Thank you so much for understanding, it's not that we don't want to answer questions in e-mails and PM's or we can't answer them in PM's and e-mails it's just there's too much to do each day and typing out answers in PM's and e-mails is not the best way to leverage our typing time.

Thank you....

Always feel bad asking people to take their questions sent via e-mail and PM's and post them to the forum but there's only so much typing time in each day and our typing time is best leveraged when our answers are posted to a public forum where hundreds, if not thousands of eyes can benefit from the answers versus just one set of eyeballs.

Thanks for understanding...

It's great that people read our forum and then send me their questions via e-mail, but please understand, the idea of the forum is to ask and answer questions on it, not send them to me via e-mail.

So if you're a lurker and you want help, please take a few moments to register and then after your account is approved you can post your questions to to forum.

There's just not enough "Typing Time" in each day to answer questions via e-mail for one set of eyeballs when if the same question is posted to the forum hundreds of eyeballs can benefit from the questions and answers.

Thank you...

If you're a Lurker...

PLEASE please please...

If you have questions, take a few seconds to join the forum and post your questions to the forum, don't send them to me or Tim via e-mail. I can't spend all day answering questions for one set of eyeballs in e-mail.

It defeats the purpose of having a forum.

I feel bad when I only give a nutshell version of the answers you're looking for and then include the link to this thread but answering questions via e-mail takes way my typing time on the forum and out of the two options, typing answers to the forum is the better use of my typing time.

Thanks,

Now... off to send the link to this thread to all the people that have e-mailed me questions since last Thursday.

We're sure we'll have a class or two but no dates have been selected yet. Best thing to do is to subscribe to the newsletter because we will always announce upcoming classes in the newsletter.

That way if you don't visit the forum very often you'll at least get the notification via the newsletter.

Can't tell you how many car clubs contacted me to let me know how disappointed they were our class schedule was FILLED before they knew about it yet we sent out THREE mass e-mails letting people know we were switching to the newsletter to notify people when we were taking reservations for classes.

Can the new product, NXT, be used on the fiberglass esterior of my 5th Wheel? How about the vinyl graphics - they are not "painted surfaces" and NXT directions tell you not to use the product on these surfaces. Could the "stick on" graphics eventually "lift"? Thanks!

Mike Phillips

NXT can be used on your 5th Wheel.

NXT is NOT formulated for vinyl graphics, we would like to note that some people have used it successfully on vinyl graphics to make them look better and protect them.

Do a search on vinyl graphics
http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/search.php

We make no claims or guarantees about whether our "Car Wax" will be save for YOUR vinyl graphics on your 5th wheel, if you decide to apply it to these surfaces you're on your own.

Some people would "experiment" with any product they were considering using on their vinyl graphics and see if it works, by this we mean see if it makes the graphics look better.

Perhaps contact the manufacture and ask them what they recommend and if they don't have a recommendation then ask them how their customer's are supposed to maintain the product they sell.

Please post back here the response you get.

Thanks!

p.s.

For a question like yours, it's better to start your own thread.

I have a 1967 Corvette that was painted black clearcoat basecoat a year ago. There are water spots on it that washing and waxing won't remove. I tried a wax that had a little polishing compound in it and all it did was make a bunch of fine scratches. What is the best way to remove the water spots short of wet sanding? Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

We love to help people by answering questions but there's only so much typing time in each day, so if possible, please post your questions to the forum instead of sending them in an e-mail or a Private Message.

If you're unsure as to where to post a question, then you can always post them in the Detailing 101 forum which is kind of a catch-all forum.

ScratchX would be the product to look at, though it will be a lot of work by hand.

I am new to this car care forum. Hopefully I am doing this correctly. I recently bought a new Porsche Cayman and really want to take care of it. All the different polishes/waxes are confusing. The sales guy at Murray's auto told me to use the Meguiar's cleaner wax and about a week later use the carnuba wax. So I bought these. I was wondering what people thought?

Thanks,

Hi Dan,

When you're new to forums it can be kind of confusing...

This thread you replied to is actually a thread I wrote back in 2005 to hopefully guide people to post their questions to the forum and not send them to me via e-mail or a Private Message, it's not really where people are supposed to post their questions....

Here's a great place to post general questions...

Detailing 101 (http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=22)

Basically you would copy and paste your message above and then click the link Detailing 101 and start a new thread like the picture below shows.

If you want to start a new thread, then click to the appropriate forum by clicking here (http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/index.php) and selecting the forum that best describes what your topic will be about and then look for the button on the left hand side of the page that says, New Thread and click on it. You'll see a place to type in your Subject and below that a message box that you can type your message into. After you're finished with your message, click on the Submit New Thread button and your message will be posted to the forum.

In case you don't re-post....

The sales guy is kind of right in that what he told you will insure the paint is clean with the first product and with the second product you'll be adding more wax and hopefully bringing up the finish quality a notch.

If this is a brand new Porsche, you shouldn't have to do anything but wash it and apply a quality wax, NXT 2.0 would be our recommendation.

Sadly, all too often a brand new car will have DISO that is

Dealer Installed Swirl Option

Best thing to do is to wash the Porsche, then pull it into the sun and inspect the appearance for swirls. There shouldn't be any, if there are then if you want to remove them we can show you how.

Cobweb Swirls vs Rotary Buffer Swirls (http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21066)

Next, feel the paint with your clean hand, it should feel smooth and glassy, if you fell little bumps this means you need to clay the paint. New cars can get dirty with bonded contaminants, it just depends upon what's in the air around the car.

How often do I need to clay my car's finish? (http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7494)

Glad you like it.

I though someone was going to post another question to this thread which is comical because this thread isn't about posting questions to it, it's about telling people not to send me their questions via e-mail or via Private Messages and me thinks that Forum Newbies think it means to post their questions to this thread when they should be picking the appropriate forum to post to, and not this thread.

It's so mis-understood it's comical.

Here's where most questions should be posted if a person is unsure where to post it, (but not to this thread).

Lot's of people like M26 as a topper, best thing to do is to give it a try on your car and see how it looks in your eyes.

By the way, this thread is not actually a place to post questions, it's a thread that asks people to post their questions to the forum, but not specifically this thread.

It's actually getting quite funny....

Your first step is to EVALUATE the vehicle. Does it shine? Is the finish rough to the touch? Are there paint defects you want to correct?

Like Joe said, what condition is the paint?

I'll take a guess that it's dull and oxidized to some extent as that's what happens to single stage paints as they get older without regular care.

We do a lot of extreme makeovers on single stage paint here at Meguair's and what we tend to use is M80 Speed Glaze. This product works great for removing oxidation and restoring the color to the paint. You can use it by hand or machine.

After you rubb all the paint out using this product you can then apply a product like NXT Tech Wax to maximize the gloss and shine.

***********************************

For all our Lurkers out there, if you have questions, please register with the forum and post them to the forum. Please don't send them to me in an e-mail.

Each day I get people that cite the forum and then ask questions via e-mail. While this is convenient for them, it makes me have to reply by sending them the link to this thread and doing my best to help them to understand I can only type so much in each day, (look at some of my replies and count how many words are in them).

I type fast but I have more work to do each day than I can get done, so priority ALWAYS goes to questions posted to the forum, not sent to me in an e-mail.

With an e-mail, only 2 eyeballs benefit from the questions and answers. With the forum potentially hundreds and thousands of people benefit from the questions and answers.

Does that explain why priority goes to the forum and not an e-mail?

Thank you for understanding, if you read what I wrote in the first paragraph of the message that started this thread on page one here,

PAGE 1 of this thread (http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7270)

You'll note that I started it out by saying

I feel bad for posting this, but each day I have people who have discovered our forum, read through it, and then decide to personally e-mail me their questions.
And I do feel bad, but there's only so much typing time in each day and I have to give priority to the forum as directed by my Manager.

Thank you for understanding.
