View Full Version : Controlling the DA Cord

I just had to replace the plug on my DA today. I am one of those people who make a loose knot at the end of the cord where it attaches to the extension cord to keep it from coming unplugged while working. I usually don't have alot of problems doing this but I did create a broken connection in my DA cord while doing this.
Just figured I would out a little note in case others did the same thing. For the time being I have gotten in the habit of once I plug the DA Cord into the Extension cord I simply stick the connection in my back pocket. Usually my back left pocket, then I drape the cord up over my left shoulder and cross it over to my right then down to the DA. This lets me have better control over where the cord is thus minimizing the chance of dragging it across the finish. If I need more or less cord I can just use my left arm to adjust the length by pulling or giving up slack. This also keeps the end from dragging the ground, gives me plenty of cord to work with, and protects the connection so I don't pull the cord apart again.
Kind of common sense but it took me a few months to wise up a figure it out so I figured I might save someone else the time and trouble.

I use a piece of duct tape wrapped over the PC plug and the extention cord plug. Just one loop around the connection is more than enough to keep them together.

I used to do that with other tools. Got tired of wondering where the duct tape went.

I bought an extension cord reel that has a "locking" mechanism on the plug so that it won't come unplugged. It's a drop-down chord hanging from my garage ceiling, which also comes in handy :xyxthumbs

And not to steer the thread off topic, but I figured you'd like this one of my garage wall, Jeff:

I'll have to keep an eye out for the locking mechanism. I have a great cord that I have had for ever. It's only a 2 conductor cord but it's 50' long. Very lightweight. Don't need the ground for the DA anyway.
Yep, I like the pic.
Too bad they never sell anything close to the concept vehicles.

I like those rims Joe. Look like some Hurricanes I had on my first truck. They are kind of hard to find nowadays. Went the way of Cragars I guess.

LOL.... sweet '57, Joe!
Here's a better view of my little '57 Chevy shrine ;)

In the smaller frame is an original magazine add (I believe it was in Life magazine) for '57. :coolgleam
Evidently, there was a yellow 57 that inhabited my garage for several years in its past. Too bad the car is long gone! My house was built and owned by my great-grandparents, and was in their posession until the house passed on to my parents (and will pass to me).
As far as your rims, I was going to say that they half remind me of a set of PMD wheels for a 3rd gen T/A, without the bowling ball/salad shooter hubcaps on them!

I just located a better pic of what I was talking about as far as the locking cord/plug:

Some of these have been recalled because of a safety hazard, but if you find one of the ACDelco ones with a grey button like I have, you'll be fine. :xyxthumbs
The only downside is that it's a 30' reel, which can be short depending on what you're using it for/with. They claim to be available outside of a reel, in 50' and 100' sizes but I've never seen them.

Shiny Lil Detlr.... How long have you had the reel? I have been looking at one to do the same thing but I have always wondered how well they will hold up. Some can get a little $$$. I suppose you get what you pay for.

If you plug the tool in, and then tie the knot, there is less stress on connector......
I have been playing with the cord in the pocket thing Jeff, seems to work well.

I believe I got it in 2002, but I do know it was from Lowe's, and I paid between $35-45 for it. I've used and abused the devil out of it (it has even fallen off the ceiling a couple times due to my yanking on it, lol) and it keeps working perfectly! :xyxthumbs

Yep, and I used to do this that way now that you mention it. I don't know why in the world I ever got out of that habit. Just forgot all about it until you brought it up. Getting old I guess.

sorry for bringing back an old topic but I thought i would share. I just bought a PC a little while ago and i got this thing called a "monkey tail" with it. its basically a soft fuzzy covering to put over the cord. its roughly 5 feet long and attaches using an internally sewn patch of velcro. works great and i dont have to worry about where the cord is. o yeah, it was from proper auto care in case ppl wanna check it out.
