  • LA Auto Show - good wet sanded cars.

I went to the LA Auto Show and was surprised at all the new cars that had scratches and "orange peel" in the paint. I took some photos of a few cars that looked decent to me. They usually sand prototypes but not production cars unless it is a very expensive car.

Corky, please stop doing this to me! The more wet sanding I see, the more I want to wet sand my new car! I've done two other older cars and both came out great, just don't want strip too much of my precious clear on mine.

That's funny! Anyway, I wet sanded my car the very next day after I bought it brand new. I mentioned to the dealer that I was going to sand it and he thought I was crazy. Here is my car done: www.glossycar.com/hood2.jpg I finished it with Meguiar's NXT.

                    ahh...maybach exelero, very nice...

Hmm...any tips for a first timer to wet sand their car? Paint is about a year old...

I assume just lots of lube, and even strokes...2000grit?

I wet sand 1-2 BMW's per week for a reseller. Most of the cars are bought coming off BMW Leasing and have lots of chips from highway use.

First: Use a paint guage to measure the paint before you start. Assuming your car has never been sanded, you might cautiously skip this, but I wouldn't.

I use a Snap-On orbital air sander with 3000 grit pads and detail spray for lube.

The purpose of sanding is to remove small chips and scratches. The larger ones will be filled in with touch-up paint

The hood on this BMW had some serious scratches, water spots, etc. The after sanding pic is this:

Following this is compounding with a rotary + lite compound. I take my time during this process to polish out the paint completely (no hazy spots that I've seen on other cars).

Following compound is glazing with Meguiar's Glaze and a finish pad on the rotary

Last step is Meguiar's #26 which the shop uses exclusively.

Finished reflection and ready for power wash to remove compound and glaze splatter.

Sanding requires the proper tools and training! I am fortunate that the shop owner took his time to show me the correct methods, BUT care must be taken or you could end up with situations like this:

This was an X5 that had been wet sanded priot to our getting the vehicle and I didn't measure the paint edges. As a result, compounding took the paint down too far on this edge (and I didn't use the rotary correctly which further damaged the edge).

Hope this helps you if you decide.
