  • Healights peeling

Both my headlights started peeling. I think its the "clear coat" peeling. What is the best method for removing it and then polishing and protecting them from UV damage? THANX!

It definitely looks as though the protective layer is coming off, but that's sort of an unusual way for that to fail - normally it oxidizes and turns yellow and rough in texture, but this doesn't look discolored at all. A bit odd. What make, model and year is this car? We ask because we're wondering about a possible warranty claim here if new enough and this coating is literally peeling off. It should not do that.

To do this yourself you're going to need to completely sand off the coating and then buff out the sanding marks. Our Heavy Duty Headlight Restoration Kit comes with 1000 grit and 3000 grit sanding discs, a hand pad for using them, a wool pad that attaches to an ordinary drill and is used with the included PlastX to polish out the sanding marks. The kit also includes a UV protection product that you apply when you're restored the lenses to like new condition.

In your case, however, the 1000 grit may not be sufficient to fully remove the coating that is failing here. We make more aggressive sanding discs and just last weekend dealt with a car in our Saturday Class that required us to start with 500 grit paper to cut through the worst of the problems, then move to 800, 1000 and finally 3000 before buffing.

Thank you for your informative response. These are after market headlights for a 2004 Toyota Celica. I bought them from JMAutoracing. Unfortunately even though I was specifically told before I purchased them that the warranty included coverage for peeling within the first year. They are not honoring the warranty even though it has not been a year since I purchased them. I was hoping the process wouldn't involve so much sanding. I'd probably mess them up more if I tried fixing them...
