Mixing a little old with a little new...
My wife and I have two dark colored cars, a true red Mazda 3 hatchback, and a pitch black Ford Focus ST. I have always loved dark colored cars, and enjoy trying to take care of them. (Crazy as that may sound) The last year or so,I have been obsessed with durability, don't ask me why, as I will usually spend at least one full day per month from March through November in my garage applying a coat of wax at the very least. This on top of weekly washes followed by either a spray wax, or spray detailer for upkeep. Because of my quest for durability, I have been using Duragloss, Collinite, Klasse, Werkstatt, some of the supposed big hitters in longevity, but also using a lot of Meguiars products.
About 3 weeks ago, I applied via G110V2 some Poorboys polish with Sealant via a polishing pad, and followed up with some Collinite 915 with a finishing pad. The cars looked fine, but something just didn't seem right. I have previously used Collinite 845, and 476, and both are fine products, but they didn't provide the look I wanted. Poorboys advertises their PwS will darken paint, and Collinite 915 is supposed to be better for dark cars because of a higher carnauba content. It just didn't do it for me. My red Mazda 3 looked more orange than red in the sun. My black Focus looked better than the red Mazda, but still not dark enough.
I don't know if any of you have this issue or not, but my wife gets frustrated when I spend these "days" in the garage once a month for 9 months in a row. Maybe this is why I was always looking for products with a reputation for durability. Anyway, she is traveling on business this week, and my kids were able to enjoy the neighborhood pool after school, so I had some free evenings to make hay while the sun was shining so to speak. One problem, one guy who works with me had borrowed my g110V2 a couple weekends ago, and wasn't done with it. So everything was going to have to be done by hand... UGH!
Since both cars paint was in pretty good shape, and were just clayed a couple of weeks ago, my plan of attack was go for the simple products. Some aio's and some finishing waxes.
The 1st "OLD": A12 Liquid Cleaner Wax. I washed both cars, dried, and began applying cleaner wax via Meguiars foam pad. Just like it always has done for years, it went on nice and easy, worked it in a little bit, applied to the entire car, then went back and began removing at the point I 1st applied it. Wow, cars are already looking darker.
Next step, I broke out one of the "NEW", Ultimate Liquid wax. I know the recommended way to apply is to a couple of panels and then wipe off, but I have not had an issue with it streaking, so I applied to the entire car, and then went back and removed from the starting point. Cars are starting to really look nice now, and smooth as a baby's bottom. Called it a night to allow the synthetic wax to fully cure.
Next day, wash one car when I got home from work, (drove it to the office), and called it a night as I got home a little later than I wanted. Besides, I knew I was on a vacation day today, so no need to rush.
This morning, some more of the "OLD" I applied #26 liquid wax to each car, and buffed off, just like I did the 1st two products. Now we are getting somewhere, cars really looking good, and each has a soft, warm glow that carnaubas give, and I really like. Better yet, my red is really RED, and my black is really BLACK
!!!
The last item to really make it pop, some more "NEW", Gold Class Quik Detailer. I am satisfied, and my arms aren't even tired, thanks to Megs being easy on and easy off.
I think i will be trying to mix up more of my extensive collection of Meguiars products in future sessions.
