I need clearcoat help!!!!

    I need clearcoat help!!!!

    I recently sanded down some of the areas on my boat where the clear coat was bubbling and chipping. I them purchased some marine varnish gloss for menards to put over the areas..... It looks like ****. It doesn't match the rest of the gloss clearcoat on the boat at all it's almost hazy looking!

    My question is if I wet sand using 3000 grain, is there a procedure using meguiar products that will cover the fine scratches of the sand paper. 3000 sands to almost just a haze. Is there a product that will fix that?!?!! Compound?!? I need help!!!!

    You normally have to use a compound to remove the fine scratches. If I remember correctly you need too either use the DAMF system of a rotary. I'm not sure how it being a boat affects that

      I'm not really familiar with the products... Is this available in stores? My thoughts from info on the web was some sort of compound would work. But which?

        Where are you?
        What products are avalible to you at your local store?
        Normally you buff out sanding marks with a rotary and wool pad. The DWMF system might work but a wool pad is my choice.

          First off, welcome to MOL.

          Second, we see you've posted this same question in two different areas so we've combined them into a single thread in order to keep the discussion in one place.

          Now, to the situation at hand. Are you working on varnished wood trim on the boat, or on a painted hull? The fact that you mentioned a "varnish gloss" has us thinking it's the teak or other wood trim and not the hull. Are we correct in thinking this? One thing you didn't mention how this was applied - is it a spray application or a brush on application? Odds are, regardless of application process, it's a fairly soft finish and a light sanding with 3000 grit will level it out and the resulting sanding marks shouldn't be too terribly difficult to remove. But because this is a potentially soft finish you might find it easy to get overly aggressive and either burn through it or just buff through it, especially if it was a spray on application.

          Maybe before we go much deeper into this we should find out what sort of tools you might have available to you - DA buffer, rotary, orbital, or just hand application - and how large the area is that needs some work. Pictures would be a huge help if you can provide them.

            I'm not able to post pics on the thread from my phone it doesn't seem.

            There is no wood. It's fiberglass followed by a gelcoat and on top if that the previous owner decided to have it sprayed with clear coat which is peeling and bubbling dime size in areas.

            I cut the bubbles and originally sanded the clearcoat with 1500. The marine clear varnish I was given looks awful. While the area is now somewhat blended its a very faded blend.... I'm looking to sand these areas with 3000 or whatever process is recommended. Is this meguiars process something I will have to do regularly or does the compound fix the fine scratches permanently....

            As far as tools... I'm working by hand but looking into purchasing a rotary if needed for best results!

                This evening i sanded down the Varnished areas back to the clear coat. so for the most part what i have now is scratched clearcoat from a 800 grain, 1500,3000 and wool pad. I guess im ready for whatever applications you have to offer to remove the scratches.

                I wish i was able to upload pics....Maybe i could email to someone?

                  I'm looking into purchasing the #105 ultra cut compound....can this be applied by hand? What polish should I use after?
