  • Heavy Duty Headlight Restoration Kit

I just bought the Heavy Duty Headlight kit. I read user comments and when sanding with the 3000 grit, some applied water and some didn't.

What do you guys do? Sand with water or not?

The safest way and for predicted results, I recommend following the directions on the box. People who improvise the process generally have previous experience sanding and polishing headlights and have developed their own technique.

    FWIW, I sand with water.

I was brand new to detailing when I bought that kit. Followed the directions and made a very neglected set of headlights look brand new. That kit is great. Not trying to hi-jack here but it kind of goes along with the op's post. What is the difference of sanding with or without water ?

Re: Heavy Duty Headlight Restoration Kit

The instructions said to wet sand with 1000 grit but no mention of water for the 3000 grit. So, I would assume not wet sand with the 3000.

Renegadejade:. If your headlights look brand new, your method was good. Did you apply water for the 3000 grit?

Yes i wet sanded with both grits. I thought the directions said to sand with water for both steps. Did you watch the instructional video?

I am not aware of the instructional video. Is it in Meguiars site?
I just read the instructions that came with the product.

Where is the instructional video? I checked Meguiars site and could not find it. I did find a short video but no demonstration of the sanding.

Re: Heavy Duty Headlight Restoration Kit

Thanks, Renegadejade. I reviewed the video, all good now. Did you spend a lot of time in the sanding steps?

Meguiars used to attach the how-to video with the product description. Don't know why they chose to bury it in the forum.

I am curious. After the procedure, how were the sandpaper and the polishing pad? Can they be reused after 2 headlights?

As a noob when I did it, I went in very cautious. The headlights were on an 08 corolla that has never been garaged and seen many miles of road between Illinois and Texas. They were rough. I sanded just like the video as far as the motions go. I sanded until my oxidation was gone and then started polishing. The polishing is what takes the most time. I didnt have a buffer at the time so the wool pad on the drill is what I used. I had great results, so if you have some experience in detailing your already a step ahead of where I was. I have used the kit several times. I can't tell you exactly how many times but yes you should be able to get more than 2 headlights out of the kit. My wool pad still looks new. I clean it with dawn dish soap after every use and spin it dry on the drill. Good luck friend, hope this information helps!

Our apologies for the misprint in the instructions. Both sanding discs should be used with water and are in fact designed to be used that way.

                        Michael:
Is there any reason that the instructional video (link) is no longer included in the product description page? I would think this would be the best place for it.
I wasted a lot of time looking for the video. I did find some but I was looking for the offical instructional video from Meguiars.

I did search the net and found a few videos but I prefer the official instruction from Meguiars. For this 1st time to treat the headlights, I would like to follow the exact intructions from the manufacturer.

There are probably experts who developed their own ways but what work for them may not work for me!
