  • NEW! Rotary Pads & Backing Plates

We have streamlined our pad and backing plate choices for rotary use with the following line up:

This is the same pad as the So1o heavy cut wool pad, just with a part number change.

Again, essentially a part number change to what was the W4000 wool cutting pad.

Utilizing an all new foam construction, designed to run cooler but actually cut better than any of our previous burgundy colored foam cutting pads.

Unchanged from our previous foam pads, but utilizing a new laminate system to secure the loop material to the foam.

Another change in foam formulation, but with better finishing qualities than any of our previous foam finishing pads.

Two backing plate options: a standard "hard" backing plate for additional cut when needed, and a softer, thicker plate for finishing or working on more delicate paints.

This handy chart guides you through pad selection for rotary use.

      Michael,
Thanks for getting us all up to speed on the new 2015 products! One question on rotary backing plates.I just bought a Makita 9227C polisher and picked up a W68 backing plate and some Soft Buff 2.0 pads. Will the W68 backing plate work with the new rotary pads? Also will the Soft Buff 2.0 pads be discontinued? Thanks for all your help.

Technically, yes, the W68 backing plate will work with the new pads, Rick. Both these new pads and the Soft Buff 2.0 have similar recesses on the back and the hook & loop material is optimized for rotary use, so you should be more than fine. The Soft Buff 2.0 pads are being phased out, yes. The new burgundy foam incorporated into the new WRFC7 pad is designed to run cooler, cut faster and finish nicer (it really is a killer pad!) and the new WRFF7 finishing pad gives a smoother feel when finishing and leaves an even nicer final finish than the outgoing pad.

          Mr. Stoops,

These are machine washable, I assume (just like the previous editions?)

          Thank you,

Yes they are, and so are the new DA foam discs.

Re: NEW! Rotary Pads & Backing Plates

Something else just occurred to me while looking through a distributor catalog... since the yellow so1o wool pad and the rest of the pads and backing plate from the so1o system have been discontinued, what is the fate of the M86 liquid product?

Re: NEW! Rotary Pads & Backing Plates

                  Hi michael

These sound good. I still have some ten year old 8 inch soft buff beige pads which are still my favorite from the Meg's range and they are like new after fifty cars. I'm very smooth with a rotary and low rpm
Do you know what the pore per inch count on these are or the compression deflection and density rating ( how manufacturers grade pads)

Closed cell, open cell or half half and is the foam from USA filter foam or is it euro foam, Japanese or the new australian foam I use from Dunlop which is 105 and 120 pore per inch

Manufacturers should really be listing the grading of each pad as I mentioned above.

Re: NEW! Rotary Pads & Backing Plates

We don't disclose the exact construction of our pads for proprietary reasons. And we find that detailing enthusiasts get too hung up on PPI and completely ignore all the other parameters you mentioned as part of the equation in pad performance. We've seen far too many people assume that the finer the PPI of a pad, the better it finishes, while completely disregarding everything else. As you know, it's possible to have an 80 PPI pad that actually finishes nicer than a 100 PPI pad due to wide variations in the other specifications. We know that this is not the answer you're looking for, but in this context all it does is muddy the waters and confuse the heck out of people as pad construction, as you well know, is far more complex than most realize. Sorry we can't divulge any further than that.

Re: NEW! Rotary Pads & Backing Plates

hey thats fine Michael, my shop has proprietary technology and techniques too and I understand that some things cant be disclosed.
business is war so they say

yeah it is very true about heavier grade foams being able to finish better than a 100
there is no set rules with foam as to going in order from softer to softer.
their all different. pore sizes, gas used to aerate them, foam densities and so forth
Have always been very interested about foam - I love the LC crimson foam as well as the many foams from Japan, Australia and Europe. Im not that fond of some USA foams though

I have many foams from the old Lake Country Eurotech and Hydrotech (still better than the CCS and Kompressor IMHO) and I still love the megs beige ones as I said, I wish they were still available but that's life

These three foams from Meguiars definately will cover 99% of what is needed from foam but you know how pedantic and results/quality orientated I am. nothing but the best will do

I'll have to give these three a whirl sometime, Im using flexipads brand backing plates as their the best Ive ever seen but it will be good to see how the pads perform with those and eventually the megs plates on my new Fein 14-15 XE ultra low speed rotary

Re: NEW! Rotary Pads & Backing Plates

We can tell you that the burgundy foam in both these new rotary pads and the DA Thin Foam Discs is designed to run cooler and finish better than our old burgundy foam. And from hands on experience on a variety of paints, I can say personally that this new cutting foam can finish amazingly well. Almost shockingly well in some situations! Further, the black foam is the absolute softest foam we've ever made so it finishes beautifully. It should also be noted that all three foams are built to very specific design parameters that we called out and none are just "off the shelf" foams. Another reason why we won't disclose the specifics.
