    Our last regular Saturday Class of 2015 and we had a great group. Nick Winn lead the way for this session and filled everyone's head with detailing knowledge.

    Jim brought in this gorgeous '55 Chevy Pickup, one of only 5500 of this specific model made that year.












    With the one-man car show out of the way, we headed into the classroom for some background info.


    After lunch it was out to the garage to put new found knowledge to the test. This Mazda 3 was a demo car for the day. Purchased new just 3 months ago, the build date tells us that it was actually assembled 11 months ago in Japan and shipped across the Pacific, then hauled by truck or rail to the distribution center and finally trucked to the dealership. Considering everything that can happen to a car during that process, and the 11 months since it was built, you start to understand why we don't always just assume that "new car" means "defect free paint". In this case, the swirls weren't too bad (once you figured out how to see them with all that heavy metal flake doing their best to hide them) but the lack of clarity in the hood was very pronounced. We hoped to rectify that issue.


    A little self inflicted damage on the nose of the car: the owner noticed some scratches that he tried to remove by sanding and then buffing out with the DAPS System and some Ultimate Compound. That system was never intended for sanding mark removal, and the heavy haze present shows the challenge presented by sanding marks.


    After removing the loose contaminants from the surface, we clayed the paint to remove bonded contaminants.


    The paint didn't really feel that bad, but this proves that claying was a good idea before proceeding to the defect removal steps.


    We split the hood into a couple of test spot areas; one for the Ultimate Trio on foam discs, the other for the DAMF System.

    Time to have the car owner fix the rest of the sanding marks on the nose.

    This is great technique for those times you have no choice but to reach; pressure directly down on the head of the tool over the pad and just guiding with the other hand.


    Time for a review of their work in direct sunlight. Everyone immediately noticed the increase in clarity and brilliance of the paint. The flake really popped, too.




    Now that's a shine..... a Meguiar's shine!! And done by a group with almost zero DA polishing experience!
