  • Pictures from April 22nd, 2017 Intro to Wet Sanding & Rotary Polishing Class

First Introduction to Wet Sanding & Rotary Polishing Class of 2017 with some eager students ready to take away as much information as they can. Students can expect to learn the following in Meguiar's Intro to Wet Sanding & Rotary Polishing:

Proper Preparation & Expectations for using Automotive Sanding & Rotary Polishing Techniques

Information on Automotive Abrasive Sanding Products including Meguiar's Professional UNIGRIT Sanding Blocks, Meguiar's Professional UNIGRIT Finishing Papers, & Meguiar's Professional UNIGRIT Foam Finishing Discs.

Information on proper use of Meguiar's Professional Mirror Glaze Compounds

    Recent Changes in Abrasive Technology

Information on proper use of Meguiar's Professional Mirror Glaze Polishes

Information on proper use of Meguiar's Professional Soft Buff Pad & Disc Options, Proper Pad Maintenance

    Basic Hand Sanding Techniques

    Basic Machine Sanding Techniques

    Basic Rotary Polisher Techniques

After a few hours in the training room, we stepped out into the garage for some demonstration from Mike Stoops.

Hand Sanding Demonstration. We used 1000, 2000, & 3000 Unigrit Finishing Papers by hand with an E7200 Sanding Backing Pad.

DA Sanding Demonstration: The below pictures shows the benefits of utilizing a foam interface pad like our S6FIS when DA Sanding.

Measuring the differences in heat build up between a wool pad & a foam cutting pad. Foam cutting pads have the ability to generate much more heat, so should be used with extreme caution.

Final polishing with M205 Ultra Finishing Polish applied on a Soft Buff Foam Finishing Pad.

Showing how to remove 3000 grit sanding marks with Meguiar's MT300 Dual Action Polisher, M101 Foam Cut Compound on a DFC5 DA Microfiber Cutting Disc.

Time for the class attendants to practice their techniques sanding & using a rotary machine. Students appreciate being able to practice these skills without having to worry about damaging the paint you are working on with our demonstration hoods & painted panels. In fact, we would recommend doing this at home if you are looking to practice. Pick up a hood from a junkyard, get it painted if needed, and start practicing.

Thanks to everyone for coming out and feel free to contact me with any questions!

Re: Pictures from April 22nd, 2017 Intro to Wet Sanding & Rotary Polishing Class

What an outstanding class! Was terrified that I would miss it, but Nick kindly took my call at 0745 when I hadn't left from San Diego yet and felt like ****. Made it in time for the latter part of the discussion, which is always so much more than a PowerPoint. Mike gives so much anecdotal information. And takes all of my questions with a grain of salt and a smile.

It's always nice to meet up with the same people again and again, from TNOG and 101: Mike, Chris, Santiago, to name a few. Out in the garage, I like to challenge myself under the watchful eyes of Mike and Nick. God knows Mike will stop me if I'm doing something stupid. So, I hit the curves of that hood. Mike was all over me, and Nick sets up camp just next-door to make sure I don't do anything crazy. With their guidance, I was able to find the most natural motion by flexing the block to wet sand up the curve without blasting the ridge, and then my first shot with wool on a rotary turned out beautiful. My product bead got a little fat, but that was quickly corrected by the powers that be. Again, it's always good to be getting a feel for what is too much or too little product/pressure/surface area of attack when you've got someone with such experience right there at your shoulder. TG Mike put that Flex PE14 in my hands, as I would've never reached for that (I wanted to try Makita, started with the 3M). Ends up it suits me perfectly. Add that to my wish list!
Pictures can't relay how much fun this was. In each of the photos Santiago took for me (Thanks, man!), I look angry at the paint or something. Hyperfocus is not a good look for me. LOL. It's not like it's a catalog shoot, so who cares??

It was an amazing, educational day. Lots of outstanding information and excellent camaraderie. Would love to come again, because you can always learn something new, but need to keep room open for those who haven't had the opportunity yet.

Mike, Nick, thank you so much. And to Meguiar's, for hosting these classes, you have no idea how much this was appreciated. I'm proud to say that your products have been in the garage cabinets since I was a little kid, and many will continue to be my favored, go-to products as I start and grow my business. This "therapy" is evolving into a means of earning, not costing. How cool to support yourself doing something you enjoy, right? So, Thanks again!

After learning hand and machine sanding nobody wants to do hand approach anymore, unless there's no choice.
It's amazing how D/A polishers/pads/discs improved lately and they took over tasks/jobs reserved only for rotary buffers before.
