  • Spiderweb scratches

I have a 65 mustang, clear coat finish. Just clayed, and DA polished the whole car, ultimate polish, and #7 just because. looked great! Until I pulled it outside. SPIDER WEB swirls! I used Ulitimate polish AGAIN, didn't seem to make a difference. I tried ultimate compound on a yellow pad, nope, UC on red pad, nope. What am I missing? I have #9, #2 and 205. Will one of those work better?

If I use 205 do I need to follow with anything before a wax?

Sorry to hear about the trouble. I can understand you are frustrated. If it makes it any better, you are not the only one this has ever happened to. This is why we stress the importance of a test spot.

Ok so for Ultimate Compound on a cutting pad to not make any improvement whatsoever, then there has to be something going on with how the product is being applied. Which machine are you using? Also, when you are referring to the pads, are these Meguiar's Soft Buff DA Foam Discs? If so, which size?

With a DA Polisher, really with any combination of pad or product, if you are trying to remove defects, we usually start with the below:
    • clean & cool surface in the shade
    • work in a small 16 inch square or 2" square area at a time
    • 4800 - 5800 OPM
    • moderate pressure
    • moderate arm speed
    • ensure you maintain pad rotation
    • 3 - 5 overlapping passes
    • wipe off residue/check with handheld flashlight or pull out into sun to inspect your results

Would you say you were using some of the above methods?

    We are here to help.

Using a HF DA. 5" Meguiars foam discs. Yes using those basic steps. I think will try 205 this afternoon.

Ok Thanks. Friendly question, are you sure these are spider web scratches that you are not able to remove or is this DA haze being inflicted?

I don't think so. It's very shiny, except in the sun.and only from an angle.

            Dkutz,

Do you want to bring by the car to our office this afternoon? We usually like to do this sort of thing at our TNOGs, but can make time to check it out for you. If you did want to, the sooner the better. Feel free to call me at 949-752-3845.

Great minds think alike. I was thinking I should bring it to TNOG but is that tonight? I live close, so I could bring it anytime really.

i just tried 205, and it's the same, if not worse. I even used a brand new pad. Don't know what I am doing wrong. I just put Nxt on it and called it a day.

TNOG would be best, the next one is in about a month:

Maybe I am just too picky, it looks really good until it's in the sun and you look at it close at an angle. Maybe come by tomorrow? It's too late today.

The paint sounds like it is on the soft side if it is marring after M205. M205 can be tricky to use finish with on softer paints. Hard to say without actually being there.

You could try a finishing pad with M205 or Ultimate Polish to see if that works out better?

How did it look after UC on the cutting pad? Was their improvement in removing the defects?

Yes there needs to be some sort of protection applied after M205 or UP as they offer no protection.

I'm not in the office today and have a busy week next week but if something comes up I will let you know. Might have to be TNOG but again will let you know.
