Open Detail training at Rasky's Auto Detailing June 21st, 2008 56K NO WAY!

So this weekend I hosted an open training day for fellow members of the 8thcivic.com forum. I also extended the invite for friends. There was about 30-35 people signed up but being a beautiful weekend in MN I wasn't surprised to only see 20 or so show.

There was a few memebrs that drove a long distance....IL being the furthest.

The event include the following.

So this idea was actually inspired by all the Zaino talk on the forum.

So here is the plan; any other ideas are welcome and will be added to the list of events if approved.
Tentative date and time: June 21, 2008 from 11:00 A.M. till whenever
-BBQ burgers and brats, chips
-Soda/water
-Open discussion on detailing questions and requested demonstrations
-Flex polisher, PC and/or Rotary demo
-Show how to remove swirls using M83, M80, and or M09
-Event Highlight:
Wax comparison! (Bring your favorite wax if you wish....though I have a LOT of them)
We will tape off 6-8 sections of a recently polished black hood and compare the results. Each section brand/wax will only be known by me and 1-2 others
-It would be nice for someone to bring a high end still or video camera so we can post pics and results.
-I’m close to a high school for a photo shoot and we could zip up Hwy 101 for a cruise later.

I will have a beat up old black car which is in need of serious help. Anyone who wants to try out either of the 3 polishers can do so. The interior is very dirty too so I can show how to clean any area you may want to see. I'm sure the owner of the car would like to see it all buffed out by the end of the day so please don't be afraid to try out any of the polishers. I will give a demo on all of them before hand.

Re: Open Detail training at Rasky's Auto Detailing June 21st, 2008 56K NO WAY!

Last but not least was the wax test. I got a black hood from my fathers body shop and buffed it out using M105 after wet-sanding and followed up with Menz Nano polish so people didn't think I was trying to give Meguiars the edge. I then washed the hood before taping 6 sections off.

Here is the hood before and after. I had to limit to one side of the hood since the damage was far to extensive to be removed.

Before

M105 is the BOMB!

After

Now just to get an unbiased opinion I had my g/f apply and remove all the waxes. She also noted what she thought of each during the application. All waxes were applied with seperate foam pads and removed with seperat towels. All waxes were given 45 minutes to dry.

The contenders...

Pic in the sun about 11:00

I had the hood sitting in the sun before the members arived and none of them knew which wax was where. People were supposed to vote on which they thought looked best but only 3-4 people voted.

Things to be noted...

3 of the waxes made the paint very dark in color with Black Magic being the darkest followed by NXT 2.0 and Zaino Z2.

At mid day with the sun directly over head all waxes looked about the same. Later in the day you could start to see the above 3 look darker again.

All waxes seemed to really make the red metalic in the paint POP.

My g/f said the Black Magic would not come off as well as the Groits an I actually had to help her remove them...even I had a hard time with them.

She did not like the idea of mixing trh Zaino in the little bottles and having to add the ZXF.

She found the Nattys Blue and NXT to be the easiest to apply and remove

Mothers and Zaino were next in the ease to remove.

We sprayed water on the hood but did not see a difference in beading. I will keep the hood outside for long term testing.

I think in the end everyone agreed that NXT yeilded some of the best results and was FAR easier to use then some of the others and at a lower cost.

I think we were all very surprised with how dark Black Magic made the paint look but the unreasonable effort it requires to remove made no one even consider using it.

Re: Open Detail training at Rasky's Auto Detailing June 21st, 2008 56K NO WAY!

I was using my old worn pads so that could be why. I stated to use about 15lbs pressure and it was not enough pressure to stop the PC from rotating which is what I use as a measure of when your pressing too hard. I had a mark on the back of the backing plate so they could see when it was spinning.

Pad in this pic is compressed in the same manner yet my pad was always rotating durring the demo's...
