RV oxidation removal advice

Need to learn from the experts. I own a pressure washing company which encompasses 90% of my crews work. But from October through April I have found that the snowbirds and local RV owners can be a very lucrative market, keeping a day crew busy full time.

Been detailing and restoring my own vintage and muscle cars for years, and am a perfectionist at heart. The AZ sun really takes a toll on the gelcoat finishes on the RV's and fifth wheels /travel trailers. Started offering oxidation removal last year. Been doing it by hand (well not by "hand", using cotton rags and nylon scrubbers). EXTREMELY labor intensive. And I have yet to get one with a uniform finish. So far my customers have been extremely pleased, but I know there must be a more officiant and professional method.

Been reading a lot on this forum, as I am a member and moderator of several other forums and not your average "newbie" who needs to be told to use the search and do some research. Looks like I need to invest in a couple DA's. Which do you pro's recommend ? I have read some like the Porter Cable and then Meguirars has there own brand.

Maybe even more importantly, I'd appreciate learning from you all the steps you have found to work the best. Which products, pads, setting speeds, ect.

Sure wish I had more than appreciation to share in return. Anyone thinking about expanding into the pressure washing field, I'd be more than willing to help you get started.

James, just a few hours ago we introduced our new, updated G110v2 dual action polisher featuring some significant upgrades and boasting some features not found in similar tools. This will be an excellent tool for your business.

Our two primary products for oxidation removal on gel coats would be our M44 Color Restorer and M49 Heavy Duty Oxidation Remover, with the M49 being the more aggressive of the two. Both can be used with a W8207 foam polishing pad on the G110v2 and many have had great success stepping up to a W7207 foam cutting pad for more stubborn oxidation, scratches, etc. We normally don't recommend using a cutting pad on a dual action polisher because it tends to scour paint, but gel coat is quite different. With either pad you would generally run at speed 5 and work an area roughly 2' square for a few minutes until the product has become very thin on the surface, then wipe off the residue and move on to the next section.

A great follow up is our M45 Polish for adding extra gloss and depth of color. This is a pure polish that really gets soaked into the pores of a gel coat and it can do wonders prior to your wax when you're looking for the best shine you can get. Speaking of wax, our top product for waxing gel coat finishes would be our Flagship Premium Marine Wax - very easy to use, dries quickly and offers the most protection and longevity in our lineup.

The G110v2 was just announced today and should be available through various online retailers as early as the end of this month.

Define "volume discount" for M44 & M49. In order to purchase direct from Meguiar's (ie, set up an account) you need to purchase several thousands dollars worth of product each month. You might try talking to a larger distributor, anywhere from places like Autogeek.net, Autodetailingsolutions.com or Detailing.com to local distributors such as CarQuest or even NAPA. The latter two will often allow you to set up an account and can work out special pricing. They should have our Marine/RV line available to them as well.

I have lived fulltime in my motorhome for 13 years now and manage an RV store in the winter months in So. Ca. I can tell you from personal experience that going from doing it by hand to using the G110 and the maroon cutting pad....produced absolute night and day different results!! and saved my arms. There are about 6 teams of RV detailers working in our resort in the winter months and most of them use pressure washers and then various machines to polish the RVs. The products they use are varied and some are "secret". Getting an "even" coverage on fiberglass by hand is impossible in my opinion and experience. If oxidation is an issue, it often takes a second application of the same or different product to get full coverage and no splotchy looking results.
