  • Acura Integra Type R *56k warning*

Well today I got off my butt to help a friend with his car. He has a 2000 Acura Integra Type R that he doesn't take care of and it hasn't been waxed in three years. His hood is HEAVILY oxidized. There was no shine left on the hood and it almost seemed as if the hood is dead. The surface was very rough. Take a look for yourself:

Here is what I did to that hood:

    Meguiar's Gold Class car wash
    Meguiar's #83 DACP
Sonus Polishing pad on speed (6)

I only got to do half of the hood because my pads failed. My cutting pad (which I think would have helped speed the process) and polishing pad are being replaced under warranty.

I did not apply wax until afterwards and I must say, it is now slick. Too bad I didn't take any pictures.

      Nice work!

Meguiar's M83 Dual Action Cleaner/Polish is a powerful, effective yet safe product that uses diminishing abrasive technology to restore finishes like you were working on. I'll bet the owner was impressed!

What happened to the Sonus foam buffing pads? In what way did they fail?

thank you! #83 is my new best friend now, which is why i bought the gallon size container

The sonus pad's velco padding were torn off. They have been used for only about 5 times. In my case, my cutting pad flew out while working on the car. I almost hit the car witht he backing plate. That would have been a no-no

Also, the backing plate was becoming very hot at speed 6 and the tip of the backing plate were melting, so I stopped right away. Was the heat transferred from the PC?

          This was my next question...

What speed setting were you using?

Meguiar's never recommends using speed settings past the 5.0 setting on the dual action polisher because of the problem you experienced. The difference in heat generated and transfered between the 5.0 and 6.0 setting is fairly dramatic and combined with the violent oscillating action and time the adhesive used to hold on the Velcro to both the foam pads and the backing plates will fail.

Stay at the 5.0 setting for heavy cleaning. It will take a little longer but you won't ruin any pads this way.

thanks for the suggestion. I am lucky they are replacing the pads.

Should I use the cutting pad or polishing pad for a job like this?

actually, come to think of it, the velco padding was ripping off even before I got my DACP. I guess running at #6 help speed the process of killing it.

My backing plate's velcro started to come off the first time I used it. Well first time I pulled the new pad off. I used the buffer at the correct speed 4 to 5 corresponding with the product used. I don't know if it just happens or I just got a faulty one. What are your thoughts?

                    WOW

I myself have a Carbon Fiber hood that is double sided! And I know that carbon Fiber can be really hard to work with.

Look's like you made the hood look brand new again! Great work I would be really happen with the out-come!

You sure improved the look of the hood 10 times over, bummer you could not finish it.

Getting hot, Melting, pads flying off!?!?
