Good eye! Yes, it is a bit longer in order to house the internal feedback circuit board that controls the power going to the motor. When you put pressure down on the tool and it starts to bog just a bit, you can actually hear and feel it ramp back up a notch to continue providing the power needed to remove those stubborn defects.

By cruise control you mean different speed settings with an on off button correct?

No, Cruise Control refers to the feedback circuit that will increase the torque when pressure starts to bog the machine down. Sort of like your car on cruise control when you encounter a hill. It allows the engine to make a bit more power to maintain speed so you can overcome the resistance of the hill. Here it helps to overcome the resistance of downward pressure. As stated earlier, you can actually hear the tool speed increase after you've started bogging it a bit.

It tops out at 6800 OPM on Speed 6 like the Porter Cable 7424XP, BUT has the added power when downward pressure is applied, and also the Easy side-port access for quick brush changes. Nice!

Yes, and look at the speed settings - they go up by 1,000 rpm for each number on the dial. Not only is the highest speed equal to the best in this class of tool, the lowest speed is lowest in class and great for final finessing of even a very delicate finish.
