  • Applying Wax with Microfiber Bonnet

Today I bought my first Ultimate Bonnet for use on my DA. My plan is to apply LSP with it.

Previously, I'd used foam bonnets on my 11" Gem orbital to apply wax/sealant, then removed by hand with microfiber towel.

I'm not much of a fan of using the W9000/W9006 to apply wax. I like having a clean applicator surface each time and cleaning those foam pads loaded with LSP is a hassle.

Has anyone used these microfiber bonnets to apply wax/sealant, not just remove it? Would I be better to stick with the foam?
See the big picture, enjoy the details

I have not tried this, nor would I. From what I have seen from some of the others the foam pads are considered the least aggressive. Applying with a MF Bonnet might be OK but I guess would increase the risk of marking up the finish somehow.

Might be something to think about when applying a one step cleaner/wax on a neglected finish. But I personnaly would not go this route. I am sure someone already has tried this though and will chime in. Interesting thought though. Thanks for putting it out.

If you run with it, please post pics.

I don't think the MF Bonnets were meant for applying wax. If that is not correct then maybe Mike will clarify for us.

try one of these if your partial to pad application

They are much easier on the hand because of their size. These are good for applying. I havent tried the MF bonnet yet. As long as you have 2 handy, and reverse them when they build up, using a slow spped, You should be ok. Just dont put wax on thick

I haven’t tried them but bonnets should work fine for applying LSPs. I don't see a great need for it (I wash my pads) but I don't see anything wrong with it.

Some people complain about the high perf sealants not washing out of pads. (At least it’s easy to spot my #21 pads; they’re permanently purple!) I would guess there’d be some similar effect with microfiber bonnets or applicators. (Anybody out there using Even-Coat applicators for #21 or NXT care to chime in here?)

Since the bonnets are intended for removing dried product they aren’t designed to prevent liquid transfer. Anything will soak right through them. You’ll have to have a dedicated pad for the product or use some kind of barrier. (Practicing safe buffing?)

If you want to keep using your GEM for big surfaces/vehicles Meguiar’s makes 11” microfiber bonnets.

I use even coat applicators for NXT Liquid application THEY WORK GREAT. It takes a small amount of liquid NXT to prime or "get them started" but after a few squares they need only a tiny amount to keep the layer nice and thin.

They are hard to wash out but I soak them in Dawn then throw them in the washer with the rest of the microfibers, where I use unscented liquid Tide. I do not put then in the dryer I figure the heat might break down the foam so I air dry.
