So it CAN be used interchangeably as a polisher and a sander, right?!

How do you go about the interchanging? Does the backing plate have anything to do with it?

See, my dad is pissing me off, he thinks he knows everything He ordered the 7424 for me (NOT what I wanted). He can't just read what's on my list of things to order, and order them like any normal person, nope! He has to go all out and buy me sh!t I didn't even ask for. And he's saying the 7336 "Isn't for detailing!!!" Bullsh!t it isn't.

The 7424 and the 7336 are identical machines. I sure would have been grateful if someone bought me a 7424. I had to buy my own PC.

Here is a link to The Definitive Porter Cable thread explaining more than you ever wanted to know about the PC.

Before you get so bent out of shape, you might want to be aware that the 7336 and the 7424 are identical machines. The ONLY difference is the counterweight and accessories that comes with each. The advantage of the 7424 (slight) is that it normally comes with a polishing pad which does have some uses. In either case, you probably need to get a different backing plate and the extra counterweight anyway.

I'm so confused, how do I go about doing that? I'm not even SURE what is included in those packages.

Dammit, I just wanted the 7336 SP. Who the hell knows anymore...

                Chill, friend. It's OK.

The only diff is the counterweight. The 7424 comes with the 5" counterweight (so does the 7335), the 7336 comes with the 6" counterweight. If you have the 7424, you will need the velcro backing plate. If you get a 5" plate, you're fine, if you get a 6" plate, get the 6" counterweight. If you got the 7336, you would've still needed a velcro backing plate. If you got a 5" plate, you'd have to get the 5" counterweight, but if you'd got the 6" plate, you're OK. Just make sure that the plates match the weights. And even that's not critical, I used my 7424 for 6 months with a 6" plate and 5" weight. I have both the 7336 and the 7424, btw.

The polishing pad that comes with the 7424 is NOT useless; it is a really nice pad for use with an Ultimate Bonnet. It's a bit smaller than the 6.5" pads, and the bonnet fits easier.

So, since you got the 7424, you'll have a nice pad for a bonnet mount. You'll need EITHER a 5" velcro backing plate, OR a 6" velcro backing plate and 6" counterweight. IF you get the 6" plate and NO counterweight, you can still use the machine no problem, just pick up a 6" counterweight someday. But the machine will work just fine. It vibrates a little bit more, is all.

Well, on this kit he ordered http://www.properautocare.com/porcabuldetm.html it says 'We supply this polisher with a professional, Flexible 6 inch Velcro Backing Plate for quick pad changes and one Variable Contact, 6-1/2 inch White Polishing Pad for general polishing and waxing. These do not come with the basic machine from Porter Cable. '

Where do I buy the counterweight and what does that do?

By the way, it doesn't really make a difference to me if he's buying me a PC or not. I'd gladly pay what I have to pay, and this may sound ignorant, but you don't know him, so please don't try and defend him. Yeah, I know he's trying to help, but he gets involved too much.

OK, well then how about just ask questions about the machine and don't bring your father into it, because the only reason you might have done that is to try to tell us something and you're not liking the answer we're giving you back.

Your questions are best answered by calling or emailing Proper Auto Care. Terry and Jan are very nice people who try very hard to make sure their customers are happy.

You're right, it does sound ignorant.

From reading your posts it seems your father knows a lot more about buying a PC than you are willing to admit.

He told me he don't know anything about it, and I was wondeirng why he was trying to force his unknowledgeable 'knowledge' on me. He thought the 7336 was a sander ONLY. I KNEW he wasn't right. You gotta understand... if you say you want something, he'll try to buy you what he wants, and then he will expect you to be happy with it. I'm just trying to say, that he's trying to buy me all this junk I didn't plan on getting in the first case, and he's making it all the more complicated. Sure, he's a nice dad, blah blah blah, but when it comes down to it, it's all about him being in control of each and every situation.

He was kinda turning me off to this whole thing, but I'm not gonna let him stop me from doing something I really wanna do. He just %$#@& [edited by Super Moderator] me off sometimes, when he doesn't listen.

This is going to be my very own 'thing,' something I want to enjoy doing. When I pick up my PC every time, I don't want to be reminded of how bitter I was, and how it's not what I really wanted. I want this to be so good, and I was willing to wait however long it would take to get all my supplies together. What's the rush? I wasn't in a rush to get all this stuff so soon. Sure, it's exciting... but with absence, the heart grows fungus. Err...fonder. It's all because he's always rush rush rush. I just wanna do what I wanna do, and I very well could have done this all by myself, except I lack the posession of a credit card.

Another thing which frustrates me. After he told me what HE ordered, without even asking if it's what I really wanted, he looked at some of the other items on my list, such as the Meguiar's clay bar, and sort of shrugged them off and said something like, "Now the other things,,, eh,,, mumblemumble.." He made them seem irrelevant. Just venting...

                              Hey,

Everybody, just take a deep breath for moment!

Now, there is nothing wrong with the 7424 PC. I have used mine since the day it came out!! Now the 7336 is the SAME machine with a 6" counterweight where as the 7424 has a 5". Does it make that big of difference? Probably not!

The question is: What warrants the use of the 6" versus the 5" counterweight? The backing plate size or the pad size? Who really knows! I have always used the Meguiar's Backing Plate and Meg's pads and the machine has performed extremely well for MANY years.

You can always buy a 6" counterweight from a PC dealer later and try it if you want. But truthfully, I really do not see what all the fuss is about.

So again, let's keep it friendly around here !
