Hadn't gotten around to experimenting yet. My first round will probably be something like a flat disk of wood or plastic with a flathead screw countersunk though it and a pad glued on. I'll probably carve the pad out of an old 6.5" pad.

Don't know if I'll try to do hook and loop, not at first anyway. On a small assembly like this the stack height builds too fast and you can end up trying to polish with the end of a cylinder rather than the face of a disk.

I have some 1" and 2" hook and loop backing plates that are made for little sanding disks. They have foam sandwiched between the mandrel plate and loop face. They're too thick to mount another layer of loop backed foam for polishing.

crazy! I was actually joking :p

If you don't mind me asking, what do you do for a living Paul? You seem to be the expert in a lot of different areas!

They say that a specialist is somebody that learns more and more about less and less with the ultimate goal of knowing everything about nothing. So a generalist is somebody that learns less and less about more and more until he knows nothing about everything.

I'm an engineer. Currently, I work in the medical device industry but I've been fortunate to be in jobs and on projects where I've been exposed to many different technologies. In school our professors always stressed that having a good foundation in fundamentals allowed you to learn new things quickly.

He, he, I've always wanted that title Five Star. But I'm happy with what everybody really calls me, nerd.

              Rocket science is overrated

Not offensive I hope, we have that picture hanging on the main billboard outside our wind tunnel lab.

The 1" backing plate looks to be a great idea. Do you plan on cutting pads up as well, or are there already some on the market?

LOL. I'm part of the Engineering Student Society at the University of Ottawa and we slapped that picture in our handbook.

If it ain't broke, then it doesn't have enough features.

If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is!

We need a new thread for this methinks.

I sure wasn’t offended. I was ROFLMAO. And that’s all I have to say on that subject (because anything else I could possibly say would get me in trouble).

Anyway, I was planning on cutting up larger pads to make the smaller ones. In theory you could use foam sheet stock (I have a few samples of varying densities to play with) but you’d have to experiment to figure out how aggressive it would be or if the particular foam was even compatible with polishing operations.
