  • PVC primer spill

Hey guys, I need some help on this one. My co-worker spilled PVC pipe primer (the purple stuff) on the tailgate of his truck. Any ideas for removing the spill marks? Thanks.

Has the solvent attacked the paint? Or is there something built up/adhered?

I am not sure. He has a good protectant on the vehicle, but I just do not know.

        Hi:

Doesn’t the bottle list a cleaner that can be used with it? If so, I would see what chemicals are listed on the cleaner, it may help you find some car care product that will remove it.

My only suggestion at this time would be rubbing alcohol.

        Good luck

Mike here is the Paint specialist
He will know better than I.

But if it is any like the stuff I use I truly think your finish is finished.

          It contains:
          Methyl Ethyl Ketone
          Cyclohexanone
          Tetrahydrofuran
          Acetone

To the best of my knowledge Methyl Ethyl Ketone and Acetone will dissolve your wax faster than you can blink your eyes and permanently etch your clear coat down to and beyond the paint layer If not caught in time. it was caught fast enough you might just have damage to the clear coat. the purple dye will be close to impossible to get out. the purple dye is there so inspectors can see if the process was done correctly

this is some of the NASTIEST stuff I ever messed with.

Hope Mike will give you better news.

          Sorry Dude.

I work in the plumbing industry, i have to agree, that finish is gone, pvc primer is extremely caustic. There is a product from Christy that dissolves primer and glue. However, if the primer has set for awhile it has probably dissolved the clear coat.

              Hey,

Oh boy! If a product is strong enough to remove the PVC primer, it would probably remove the paint as well. I will see what I can find out.

Actually, the product from Christy is extremely safe, it's pH balanced, and is actually used to wash your hands and tools that get either glue or primer on them. I'm going home tomorrow and would be glad to look at the info on the container and get back to you guys tomorrow night.
