  • Severe oxidation

I'm trying to restore the roof of my dark blue Mazda Protege. It is currently splotchy with a film of white. I have tried Color Rx and Compound 7 before I start using the Deep Crystal system. I have put in a lot of elbow grease and have made small progress on the roof (size of a small melon). I can see the original color underneath--looks really good.

Could you recommend a better compound or possibly a car buffer that could make the process easier? I spent 2 hours to obtain the melon size progress...

    Appreciate your help.

Do you have any pictures? It sounds like you're describing clear coat failure. If you can get a pic it would help out!

      Re: Severe oxidation

If it's a base coat/clear coat finish and you're getting that nasty blotchy white appearance, odds are it's clear coat failure and the only real way to fix it is to repaint. Sorry. There really isn't even much that can be done to improve the look, let alone fix it.

Have a look HERE and HERE for some examples of clear coat failure. If your car looks like either one then I'm afraid your stuck.

You are right. My roof looks like pictures Mike-in-Orange posted.
Well, I guess I learned new terminology today. Too bad it was "clear coat failure." I will do my best and protect what is left. Thanks for your help.

Sorry to hear, but that's what the California sun can do to a car.
