  • Paint damage on hood from car bra

This past weekend I drove from MD to NC and put a car bra on my hood. Big mistake. I'm not sure if it's because I was traveling at high speeds for 6 hours or if the bra itself is just a poor quality, but I now have scuffs all along the hood where the edge of the bra was. I had just done a spring detail on my car using clay, ColorX, and NXT so the finish was nice and smooth. Now when I run my finger across the hood, there is a significant difference in the feel of the good paint vs. the scuffed paint.

I have no pics as I'm currently at work, but can you offer any product advice based on what I've said? I drive an 00 VW, and I do have a PC to use.

have you tried to clay it again and see how it feels afterwards?

    can you post any pics?

    wash
    clay
    M80
    NXT

if there are not scratches/swirls then you won't need the M80 and you can use somethingl ike #6 instead.

its sort of hard without pics.

Yeah, I know no pics is a bummer. I just got back Monday night and have been busy with work since, I haven't even had a chance to wash the bugs off yet. I don't think claying the area will do anything, I'm just worried it scratched the clear off. It really feels that bad. Has this happened to anyone else that uses a bra?

you think it scratched the clear right off?

that's beyond buffing services. that's something else entirely.

i HOPE that didn't happen to you.

Me too, especially since I have a huge show coming up in 2 weeks. Good thing my hood is usually open...right? Trying to make the best of a bad thing

I did notice that the paint is chipping off my hood underneath and around corners. I had it replaced 15 months ago due to a deer crash -- but come on, 15 months and the paint is chipping off?! Give me a break. Hopefully I can get a repaint, and it'll take care of this mess on the top as well.

And before anyone else does it, I understand that...

Re: Paint damage on hood from car bra

Thanks guy. I swung by a show while I was in NC and still managed to snag 1st with my crummy hood (which was open and slightly hidden, thankfully). The one in a couple weeks is pretty important though, it's a biggie. I'm about to go order some stuff including swirl removers and such. Hopefully this whole mess will turn out ok.

I give this bra a big fat THUMBS DOWN

I would certainly try using M80 and the PC on the affected area. Most likely the bra was not planted firmly enough against the hood and vibrated and/or rubbed against it, and while that probably did scratch the paint up a bit you can most likely minimize the appearance if not totally correct it.

I recently drove to an out of state show as well and used a bra on my car. It has the little upturned airfoils (for lack of a better term) that force the trailing edge of the bra against the body panel. I've only used this bra a handful of times and never for longer than it takes to get to my destination, then it comes off immediately. If the bra you used does not have a method to keep it firm against the panel, I'd look at getting a different one. And use it very, very sparingly.
