  • SHO detail update

Hi guys, (and gals) well, since it has started warming up here in Michigan, I decided to climb on the SHO.

To refresh, and for some "before" pics, the old thread is HERE

Anyway, I've 83'd it to death with my PC, but my parents showed up last night and wanted me to wash the Camry. Which I did, and the SHO was outside in the sun from 9:00am to 11:00am and the whole trunk milked over.

So, I 83'd it again, got it back, and have now run a cleaner wax over it, and the polish from the three-step, over the whole car as well. (yes, she's back in the safe confines of the garage

Here is where I am currently:

My question- the car is not clear coated, and want to know what wax I should use to best protect this thing so that it won't cloud that fast- I know it was because there was absolutely no protection on the paint whatsoever, but I still want to know what y'all think. I really don't think Gold Class is the best, because it isn't a clear coat... And the trim is going to be repainted...

    Thoughts?

nice job.... i think you should put some dressing inside the wheel wells and also clean up the bumper/fender line and the trim edges.... for protection just put nxt on it and i think it would help prevent clouding if you put lots of polish into it.... such as #7.... btw is there a lot of orange peel on the side? it looks like it doesnt really give a real clear and deep reflection even though theres not really any scratchs or defects on the paint....

Older single stage paints love #7! Don't shy away from Gold Class just because the car has single stage paint - it's actually really nice stuff. Put it on top of the #7 and you're car will look great!

The car is by no means done- I'll detail the wells and that stuff later on- it's got a lot of work to be done yet... I was just concerned with getting the paint waxed and sealed.

There is orange peel, but the car was repainted before I got it- and it's a bad Maaco-type repaint job and I have no idea how much paint is there, and I'm not even getting into what could be a huge mess with that fiasco... It is a good '20 footer' car, but not something I'll wetsand, etc., the painted edges, overspray, etc... Are not good at all, and if I end up keeping the car, I'll need to have it repainted to be up to my standards. Heck- there are three different shades of red on the car... They're close, but I can tell...

I guess I'll try the Gold Class, but I was wondering if the regular carnauba wax (step 3) would be better than the GC or maybe the NXT.

        Thanx!

I think you would get the results you want using the gold class. I like it for my lsp.

Well, I just bought a bottle of NXT today, cause I need to wax my '04 Taurus as well, so I'll give the NXT a shot. If it isn't up to snuff, when I rewax in a few, I'll hit 'er with the gold class again.

As for performance, back in the day, the SHO's were venerable to just about any normal production car. Ford and Yamaha detuned the engine because the original design was much faster than the stock 5.0L Mustang. Still, the way it sits, it'll beat a Foxbody, and a lot of cars it's a drivers race. The key is to run them from a roll- the secondary intake system comes on in the upper ends of 3,000 RPM, and that's when a lot of cars fall off (especially by 5K) but the torque curve on a SHO is very flat to 7,000 rpm. They're by no means kings of the road anymore (only 220 hp) but the Yamahammer is still a "What the heck was that?!?" car especially in 3rd gear on a run well up to and past 100mph (in Mexico)

Top speed stock is 142-ish MPH. Mainly topped out by wind force and tranny gear to overcome it- there is still RPM left if there was more gear. There are some turbo and Supercharged SHO's out there that are pushing 400+ hp and 400 ft lbs. torque...

The V6 Generation I's (89-91) and the Gen II's (92-95) are stock quicker than the V8 Gen III's (96-99) but the Gen III's are a BMW-esque package with teh suspension upgrades, etc., that made me buy one of those too- and I straight piped my v8...

              Here was my v8:

And here are the straight pipes in action... Muwaaahaaahaaaa!

              CLICK ME FOR BADNESS

Why do this? Well, when that sound comes from a lowly Ford Taurus next to you on the road, the looks are absolutely PRICELESS... It wasn't as fast, but it sounds sooooo sexy...

I like that! I don't think I've ever seen a Taurus in that color. Must not be very common. Was it unique to the SHO?

No on either car- the '91 is Electric Currant Red, and the '97 is Pacific Green CC Metallic. Both were available in other trim models... I did like the PGCCM though- when detailed out right is looked awesome in the sun.

I just NXT'd two coats today, hopefully to get some pics tomorrow. Came out well. I haven't waxed the ground effects yet, but they are coming off the car to replace some brackets, and Ill detail them off the car- much easier than getting my fat rear down there.

Great job on the SHO! I would like to find a Gen II or III SHO. I had a Gen II Sable with the 3.8 V6, but always loved the SHO. The pic of your 97 makes me want to look more actively for one.

Thanks for the compliment- I worked quite hard on that automobile... Almost got separated over it!
