  • Paint chipping on hood

Hey guys, my name is Craig and I have a 2000 Civic EX that is in really good shape, all except the paint on the hood. There are several spots that are chipping and the paint is spidering. One of the guys at work told me to compound it, but I wanted to get another opinion before I did that because I have never used polish or compound before. Here are a couple pics that show what the paint is doing. Does anyone have any ideas on how to stop this from getting worse, or even just to make it less visible?

Looks like clear coat failure to me.

I have the same thing on the hood of my truck, except it is much worse. It is clear coat failure to the best of my knowledge. What I've found works well to make it less noticeable is #80, but I'm assuming you don't have an G100 so I suggest you get a tube of ScratchX. Hmm on second thought, I can't remember is ScratchX breaks down clear or not. If it doesn't, it might make the cracks more noticeable. Let me give it a try on my truck and I'll get back with you on that one. As for a wax, to hopefully stop it from getting worse, I suggest #26 if you can get it. I've found it at Napa and other parts stores. The great thing about #26 is that is does not dry white. Anything that dries white will get in the cracks and make them more noticeable. Hope that helps.

Hey guys, thanks for the ideas. I looked up some info for the ScratchX and it said that it is clear coat safe so I am thinking about trying that and then using the yellow wax once I go over the scratches. If you can think of anything else, please let me know. I treat my car like my baby, it only has 59k on it so it is not close to death by any means and I want it to look good for a long time and I hate the fact that the hood is all scratched. Plus this is a lot cheaper than having it repainted. I really appreciate the ideas, thanks again!

          Re: Paint chipping on hood

I'm just re-posting to clarify my earlier post. When I said I wasn't sure if ScratchX breaks down clear, what I meant was I wasn't sure if, when you work ScratchX into the paint for a sufficient amount of time, ScratchX turns clear. I'm not sure if that made any more sense! Either way, it does turn clear after you've worked it in enough, so it's not anything to worry about.

          Good luck with it, Craig!
