  • Paint falling after 1500 miles

    Hello,

This is my first post here.

I had my car (2005 Mercedes c320)'s hood and front bumper replaced this January. Just after 1500 miles, I got numerous rock chips on those parts. See pics below.

I drove this car only on highways and city roads. This is happening only the parts I replaced, so I'm suspecting that this was due to a poor paint job.

I did research and learned that my car originally had CeramiClear coating from PPG, but the shop who repaired my car used paint from Standox.

Is Standox comparable paint/coating to CeramiClear? I'm a total novice to painting and coating world. I'd appreciate any pointers to know more details about these brands. Thanks!

i would suggest you to repaint those parts, and put a clear bra on the front of your car

I have found that repainted areas are more prone to flaking from rock chips that original factory paint. Maybe a clear bra is tha answer.

to mol. with the above. My first choice is to get the body shop to rectify this paint. I really don't think after so short of time, the paint should be chipping this easily. Just my opinion.

Thanks for replies. When I repaint, I'd like to use CeramiClear, but I can't seem to find a body shop in bay area (near Sunnyvale, CA) which uses PPG. Any recommendations?

Firstly I'd be arguing the point with the shop that did the repaint. A good bodyshop should have at least a 10 year guarantee on all paint work. At least here in Australia they do. Secondly I'd be calling in to your local Mercedes dealer, explain the situation and see who they would recommend.

Did they tell you about any kind of warranty? Unless they were and sand and paint shop, you would most likely have a warranty against defects.

The body shop where I go has a lifetime warranty for their work.

I am not so sure that the body shop is at fault. You said you had the areas resprayed for chips and now you have more chips. I agree with those above, get a bra.

No, I replaced the hood and front bumper because they were damaged in an accident. I had almost no chips before. Car's total mileage was 9,000 miles at that time.

Thanks for pointing out about warranty, scooter79 and roushstage2. The shop has lifetime warranty, but I do not want to use the same shop again. Let me just say that this wasn't the only mischief they did.

Did you go through insurance then? If so, I would have an adjuster come back out, look at it and explain what is happening with the paint, along with the other "mischief," and ask if you can go somewhere else.

Re: Paint falling after 1500 miles

I contacted my insurance company. Their estimator took a look at my car, and said that something was wrong with the paint, but that because they already paid for the repair, I had to deal with the shop directly to get the original repair cost refunded.

I called Standox, and asked if they have any idea what was going on my car. They sent me an specialist to take a look at my car. It turned out that the shop didn't use sealer before they painted the base color on those parts, but painted the base color directly on them. This sounds really dumb.. Or is it common not to apply sealer first??
