  • I hate dump trucks!

    Hi Folks,

I went to Tampa (from Miami) this weekend and had to drive across Alligator Alley. There was lots of traffic and I got stuck behind this huge dump truck. We're all going at least 80 and both lanes are packed and I can't get out from behind him. I started slowing down slightly to try to get out of this whole thing but no one would get into the space between me and the dump truck. It was spewing rocks like a son of a gun! I kept hearing them popping against my car.... POP! BLAM! And with each new pop a swear word emerged from my lips. I could see the rocks coming at me... little white balls of terror impacting me at a combined speed of 160 mph. It was a nightmare. I was stuck behind it for a good two minutes before I could get out.

When I got to Tampa I inspected the front of my car. No surprise there were rock chips GALORE! Some of them so big and deep I can sit the tip of my pinky finger in them. Right down to the bare metal. I'm devastated!

Are these spots going to start to rust if I do nothing? And if I want to do something, what can I do besides a whole darn repaint.. which I can't really afford at the moment.

I'm sick to my stomach at the look of the hood of my beautiful car. One even got the side of my driver's door. Not only a rock chip but also a little dent it hit so hard.

I'll post pics soon. It's too dark right now.

    Sorry to hear about this.

You wouldn't have happened to catch the license plate and company? In some states, trucks are required to cover the trucks to prevent this kind of thing from happening.

The best thing to do would be to get a touch up paint bottle and blot every one of them.

    Good Luck!

I give dump trucks a very wide berth.. even if the dump bed is covered, rocks and such still fall out.

You would be better off to pull over to the side of the road and wait a few minutes to let him get way ahead of you.

A few years back I was heading north towards Tampa on I75 when a dump truck passed me and pulled in front of me. Shortly after he pulled back in my lane his rear dump hinge broke. He was hauling golfball sized smooth river rocks.

I saw the rocks bouncing on the highway and was able to change lanes to avoid the mess. The guy behind me was not so lucky. I pulled over with the truck and the guy and gave the other driver my name and told him I witnessed the incident. His windshield was cracked in two spots and his hood looked like he had gotten caught in a bad hail storm.

              I don't trust dump trucks.

You could try a insurance claim if you noted the reg number.
All or most body works are now totally or partly galvanized. If your affected areas are not you should notice rust in a few days time.

I usually just slow down no matter whats behind me. If they are following to close and rear end me then its their problem. They will get a spare tire and a hitch in their grill/hood. Ill just get a new rear gate.

Sorry you paint got chips dude. I wouldnt of let the guy off without calling his company or calling the cops at a minimum.

Its a good thing I dont have an ARB bumper, I had a guy spit hillbilly juice out his window and land on my windshield. Things I would of done with a bigger bumper on my Jeep would be bad.

Florida has a law about securing your load, however, I've never heard of a dump truck company paying out to repair damaged vehicles. This is why I steer clear.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.
