  • need help-when is it ok to wax new car

I would like to no when it is ok to start waxing my new 08 lexus. The dealer told me to wait a year.I called a very good detailer he said i could wax it any time. A coworker said i could harm the clear coat if i wax it in the first year. The owners manual said wait until the water proof coating wears off but no time frame on how long coating last.

    Check this thread out...

    Paint Needs to Breathe

Simple answer is that you can wax you're car as soon as you want. The factory paint has been baked on at the factory and by the time it gets out the door it's cured. So it's for sure cured by the time you drive it home.

The only exception to the above would be if the new car in questions were to have been damaged in transit or while on the dealer's lot and a section, area or panel had been repainted. This would then be fresh paint and most painters will tell you to wait about 30 days before waxing or sealing the paint.

Lexus waterproofs their cars? Wow, I'd like to see some info on what this coatings is. I wonder if a light polish with M80 would get rid of it and give you a nice, clean finish to apply the wax to. As I think of it, since it appears Lexus recommends waiting for this coating to wear off, from which I can only deduce that it is supposed to wear off, I think I'd help it along with M80 and then wax it.

You mean you haven’t 'protected' your new Lexus yet! Just funning wiht you.

Listen to Mike he knows of what he is talking about, and if your finished was damaged in transit that should have been disclosed to you when you purchased your car.

Meguiar's 5-Step Paint Care Cycle thread as it wil help you keep your ride lookign it very best. And no claying you car with "Smooth Surface Clay Kit" wont harm your finish, and yes it makes a huge difference in the finished product.

When I picked up my GTI two years ago I paid to have something like that applied which did an OK job but that was back when I didn't know a thing about car care. After reading MOL daily for two months I picked up some M80 and never looked back. The finish on my GTI now pops which it didn’t have a chance of doing before.

My two cents would be to do what looks good to your eye, but a good polish and a couple of coats of NXT 2.0 will make a world of difference.

Here is my daily ride after its last polish and NXT make over.

I'm getting it a new car next week....I'm waxing it straight away (which I've always done)

Wash, clay, polish if needed, and then wax!

I would at least wash, clay and wax.

And I would even go as far as telling the dealer give it to me dirty..... no make ready.... anything they're going to do is probably going to be a negative for you!

I know that's terrible to have to drive off in your brand new car dirty, but it's in your best interest imho.

Also have a stamp made up that says "do not wash" to be able to put across the work order when you return for any kind of service. The DISO seems to be available, at no additional charge, with every visit.

Oh btw FWIW, I'll be doing a full detail of the car as soon as I get it home from the dealership. I'll document it as well as I can......Since the topic of waxing/claying a new car has cropped up a couple of times - and yes I do think it's required.

We have that car here in the Dominican Republic, think is this one and it's really similar to the Peugeot 207 think it is, it's a very nice looking car

Re: need help-when is it ok to wax new car

I just helped my daughter select her first new vehicle-- a Honda CRV-EX AWD. It's black!

While I was at the same dealership a few days later with my own vehicle I was talking with the salesman. He was telling me about a guy who spent a day detailing his new vehicle right there in the dealer's garage (bet the insurance company doesn't know that). It sounded a bit extreme, but I guess it would have been a great idea, had I thought of it before she took delivery on the CRV. Now we'll have to wait for a 50-degree day on a weekend to get 'er done.

Don't believe anyone who tells you not to wax your new car for 1 year. That's nuts! And they won't help you recover your finish after that year either. The same dealer was probably trying to sell you their special sealant product before you took delivery.
