  • Finger prints thru the clear?

Hello All, here's what happened. I had a small area of the car damaged. The body shop from what he explained to me spray's the small area that they worked on with "paint" and then has to clear coat a larger area to plend it in. Well on the larger area that they cleared there are hand prints starting to show up as the clear coat out gases. Has anyone else ever heard of this? It has been 45 days since the car was painted.

Any info guys would really help me. I am going back to the shop on Monday to see what they have to say.

    Thanks.

I'm fairly new to the whole painting realm, but what I will say is it seems like they didn't take the time/care to properly prepare the surface, and I would take it back to them to have them fix it for free.

The touched the paint when it was wet? That's what it sounds like.

That sounds correct but why didn't it show up at first? It is getting worse almost day by day. Is that because the oils from his hands?

I am taking it back tomorrow.

Definitely take it back and let them re-do it. Does it look like the fingerprints are under the clear or on the clear? If the fingerprints are under the clear they'll have to strip the paint off and start over, if the fingerprints are on the top of the clear coat then they can remove them using a rotary buffer and some type of pad and compound, this is where new problems could start.

All too often when a body shop does compounding work they remove whatever defect it is they're trying to remove but they leave swirls in the paint because they just don't invest the time and the extra steps to remove their swirls from their first compounding step.

Usually they'll apply some type of glaze over their buffing work so it will look good when you pick up the car, then as you wash the car the glaze will wash off and reveal the compounding swirls.

It would appear that historically most people savvy enough to come to this forum, go through this experience with a body shop, end up buying a polisher and learning how to remove the swirls themselves because they learn and understand if the body shop they chose can't do the buffing work right the first time they usually don't get any better with more chances they just keep doing the same steps and then glazing it so it looks good when you pick it up.

That's kind of how the industry works.

So when you take it back, maybe print this out so you can let them know you understand the issues and don't want to trade one defect, (fingerprints), for a different defect, (rotary buffer swirls).

Best of luck to you and let us know what happens.

Mike, thanks so much for replying. It looks like the finger prints are under the clear. See pictures. When I got the car back I waited about 40 days and used #80 on it but no wax. It seems to be getting worse as the paint out gases. Have you ever heard of this? It is almost like the oil from his hands as the paint cures makes the situation worse.

I am taking it back I have a life time warranty from the shop and the insurance company so I will get it fixed one way or the other.
