  • New project

hi, i just recently bought a 2000 kia sephia color black. the car is nothing special, basically just a beater for going to work. I just cant stand driving it when it looks terrible. It isnt in to bad of shape, although does have some rust, the hood looks like it is a big swirl mark, and has scratches all over it. Also the headlights are kind of hazy/yellowish. I would like to know how you guys would tackle this car to get it looking at least acceptable. I do have a pc7424 with #80 and 83 also various waxes. Thank you

I dont thing the previous owner ever waxed this thing

Is the rust just on the wheels? The wheels would just need replaced it seems.

As far as having a PC, just have to to wash and clay, then do a test spot with #80 and #83, and see which product does the job. Then repeat over the whole car.

The headlights you could go over with PlastX.

There is some rust starting to bubble around the rear wheel wells but that is about it. for the wheels i was thinking of cleaning the up and trying to paint them and putting on some hubcaps.
      Thank you

        Re: New project

If I were you, since you already have a PC and some #80 and #83 I would wash, clay and then start doing some test spots, evaluate and if you are happy with the results then just duplicate this process on the hole car.

        Your process should look like
        Wash
        Dry
        Clay
        #80 (or #83 if needed)
        Wax

Another thing that you can do is get some #66, this will save some time since you are not looking for a perfect finish so if you get this it would look like

        Wash
        Dry
        Clay
        #66
and you can combine this with another wax of choice if you like to

As for the headlights, get some PlastX and with a terry cloth towel and some elbow grease work it real good against the headlights, multiple passes may be needed.

Well, sanding off the rust and repainting is always an option. As far as the rust on the car, you would want to avoid those bubbles with the PC, or else you could break one open.

I agree, I would tape those spots so that the PC doesn't touch it

Um basically as cheap as possible. This is just a commuter car for me so no show car appearance for me lol. I would like it to look decent but making it last if more important. Any help you can give would be great.

                    Read these:

                    A Primer On Rust
                    Ospho Rust Converter

I have used the Ospho and it seems to have done fairly well. I have also sprayed WD-40 on rusted parts, blotted off the excess, then painted with Rustoleum...the WD-40 is a compatable thinner to the Rustoleum, and being a penetrating oil, it gets deeper into cracks and seams that the Rustoleum can on it's own giving more complete protection once it's sealed in by the paint.

On my current car, I have used spray-on Cold Galvanizing, then coated it with spray-on bedliner. Granted this is more rust prevention than convertion.

Everything mentioned above is inexpensively available at ACE or True Value Hardware and Home Depot (I'm not sure about the Ospho at Home Depot though).
