  • Procuring Meguiar’s Products

New to the forum and want to list what I currently have in my detailing arsenal. I’ve been neglecting my cars for quite some time now and need to change that. There have been lots of good prices on products at the local automotive stores and online so I’ve been slowly buying detailing products. Here’s a current list so far and I’m wondering what I should add to the mix.

    - Porter Cable 7424 with counter weight
    - Gilmour Foamaster II Foam Gun
    - 2 grit guards
    - Several 5 gallon buckets
    - Deep Crystal System Steps 1, 2, and 3 (my first attempt in detailing my car)
    - Quik Clay (old and dried out)
    - 1 bottle of NXT car wash (30% left)
    - Several bottles of Deep Crystal car wash (on sale)
    - Several bottles of Quik Detailer
    - Smooth Surface Clay Kit
    - ScratchX
    - Show Car Glaze #7
    - NXT Generation Tech Wax

Off the top of my head, I still need the following and recommendations on where to get them.

    - Micro Fiber (MF) wash mitt
    - assortment of MF towels
    - Pads (quantity and selection?)

    What else am I missing?

    TIA

Are you in the US? I'll assume that you are for now.

Well, you certainly have enough to clean your car.... it is just sort of add ons now.

If you are working by G100, I would tend to say to get some #80 Speed Glaze.

Always more towels and cloths. As for pads for the G100, I would start off with a case of 6 from ADS, 1 7006, 2 9006, 3 8006, and a pack of 6 MF bonnets for wax removal over the 7006 pad.

Also things like glass cleaners, All Purpose Cleaner, trim detailers, tire shine, metal polish, interior products, etc are all possible add-ons.

      Re: Procuring Meguiar’s Products

I'm from the SF Bay Area.

Is it voodoo to mention PC7424 instead of G100 around here?

So you recommend SG#80 instead of SCG#7 for polishing? If so, why? I've read that DACP#83 and SG#80 are a common/great combo but they aren't available locally, hence choosing ScratchX and SCG#7.

Thanks for the recommendations of pads! I don't have a backing plate, so I would need the Meguiar's DA Polisher Velcro Backing Plate (W67DA), right?

Regarding the add ons, that'll come in time. Right now I want to work on the core items.

BTW, added a bottle of NXT Generation Tech Wax 2.0 to the mix. Wonder what the differences are between the two - haven't searched yet.

#80 Speed Glaze is what Meguiar's calls a cleaner polish. It will remove scratches/swirl marks, light oxidation. It contains diminishing abrasives that break down as you polish the paint removing the swirl marks. It also contains nearly the same trade secret oils as #7 show car glaze. Show car glaze has no cleaning/defect removal abilities it just adds the polshing oils back to the paint giving you that final pop to the paint prior to using you LSP. Scratch-X is a great product and I use it mainly by hand on small areas. If you get the newer version of Scratch-X you can use it with the g-100 with a polishing pad. You can kill 2 birds with one stone by using 80 in most cases. You can source the 80, pads and the packing plate you need from ADS(autodetailingsolutions). My only problem with using Scratch-X is that it only comes it the small tooth paste size container making it harder to use on an entire car. 80 can be had is 32 ounce and gallon sizes.

          Re: Procuring Meguiar’s Products

          First off, welcome to MOL!

Never a problem to mention the Porter Cable 7424 specifically around here. We have a dealer locator feature on our main website (http://www.meguiars.com/dealerlocator/) that can help you find dealers for our Mirror Glaze Professional Line in your area. Your zip code returned several possibilities within 20 miles so those will likely be good local sources for M80 Speed Glaze, M83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish, etc. Since you have the 7424 we would highly recommend you step up to these products to get the most out of it, and your vehicle's finish.

As for the differences between NXT Tech Wax and NXT 2.0 - the 2.0 contains the same hydrophobic polymer technology found in our Ultimate Quik Detailer so it repels water in the same manner as UQD, plus it lasts a lot longer than the original version of NXT. It's a pretty serious upgrade so if you liked the original you'll love the new version.

Thanks, I remember reading about the cleaner polish in the 5 Step thread. From a preliminary search I chose to go w/ ScratchX (SX) as the cleaning/prepping (along w/ claying the car) and SCG#7 as the pure polish. I do have the new and improved version of SX (2 tubes to be exact) and looking forward at using my 7424 w/ it.

I'm sure I read it somewhere but which goes first, claying or SX? IIRC the process is to remove below surface defects (SX), then above surface contaminants (clay).

Doh...I should have checked there first. I've visited ADS and Meguiar's site reading up on the Professional lines. The Consumer lines were so easy to purchase from the local automotive stores that I ended up buying them. Maybe after I use the Consumer line products, I'll step up to the Professional line.

In addition to my original post, I have the "How-To use the PC for Showcar Results" thanks to a coworker. Come to think of it, he started me on a new addiction, argh!, I'm on MOL more then my car forum.

I also need to add painter's tape to my collection.

              Re: Procuring Meguiar’s Products

Just added, Costco 36 pack of micro fiber towels and 4 pack of micro fiber wash mitts.

Slowly but surely, I'll get there.

              Next up, pad selection.
