  • Any hope for this paint?

These pics are from my parents 87 Chrysler Fifth Avenue. To put it nicely, it was never cared for aside from the occasional drive through car wash. What exactly is this white stuff on the paint? What if anything could be done to get it looking decent? Is a respray necessary? I'm not looking to do a complete restoration, but I'd like to get it into decent shape so it doesn't look so embarassing in the driveway.

That's clear coat failure. Only a repaint will fix that.

          Nah, it'll buff out

Too bad you're not closer to Texas, I'd actually try

Really? You can fix that? Can you explain how? I thought you can't do anything with cc failure.

Re: Any hope for this paint?

I've tried buffing out a car with clearcoat failure.

I used M84 with a wool pad to try and remove the swirls near the failure. In the end, it was useless. The paint had become so sensitive that a clean microfiber would instill scratches. In the clearcoat failure areas, the paint did not respond well to compounding. It looked a little better, but it was milky and not even close to clear.

Wow! The paint appears "dead" from the pics. Paint job time!! Before the paint job, get a rotary buffer and use the car as a Guinea Pig. Yeah, you can't ruin what's already ruined.

                            That's exactly what I'm planning.
