  • Products for my neglected 2007 Toyota Prius

When I bought my Prius, the service manager warned me about fogging the headlight covers by using certain products at self-serve car washes. Long story short - I couldn't remember well, so I've been reluctant to use any products on my car, just wash and rinse at the car washes, and I've bucket washed with Meguiar's purple Deep Crystal car wash. Since August 2007, I haven't waxed it, much less polished, clayed, or cleaned the paint.

I've driven in salt air and industrial air. My windows get water spots from rain - even heavy, extended rain - and seem to get blue streaks, too. Water at the car washes often seems to have residues, even though I let the water spray for a while onto the ground to clear it out (or I wash the wheel wells first). Perhaps it is recycled water.

Now I want to just bucket wash and care for the exterior by hand. Buffers are too heavy for me, so it will all be by hand. I bought the Deep Crystal series of products, but I haven't used them yet, and I think I'll actually want to use the NXT series (after many hours of research on, and past experience with, many varieties of products, including Zaino, Mother's, Zymol, Adam's, Turtle Wax, and others).

So - should I give my Deep Crystal series to a friend and just start with NXT products, so they bond to the paint, which is as bare and exposed as it is ever going to be? Which are the best products for my car? Also, MF vs. cotton terry????

    TIA!!!

First off Welcome to Meguiars Online!!!
I would clay the paint with Meguiars Smooth Surface Clay Kit after a good wash.
Then I would polish the car with the Deep Crystal Series.
Finally Follow up with some NXT 2.0 Wax.

I would say the salesman was worried about the harsh cleaners at the local car washes. Some car washs have that 'pre-soak' that you apply before you use the soap. If I had to guess that stuff is fairly strong and over time could fog the head lights. Personally I only use the rinse water at the local car wash like you. Even the regular soap is harsh and will shorten the life of the wax.

The 3 step deep crystal series is a great combination for people like you that are wanting to work by hand(they work good with a DA also). Claying before using Step #1(cleaner) will greatly improve the look and feel of your paint. If you want you can use step #3(wax) and follow that with NXTv2. Or if you do not want to wax twice you can replace step #3 with NXTv2, either is fine.

You may of read this but its got some good info in it in case you have not:

Thank you, Jeepster04! I had not found that post, and it answered most of my questions, and very thoroughly! I'm still not sure which wax I want to use for my light paint - Driftwood Beige, I think they call it: #21 followed by NXT 2.0 ???

Carfire, thank you for the post! Do you suggest the Deep Crystal series because I already have it or because you view it as being the best suited for an '07 Prius?

So, what do you think of #21 then the NXT 2.0, compared to DC step #3 then the NXT 2.0? Liquid or paste NXT?

Just stick with the liquid Nxt 2.0

With your paint being a little neglected, SwirlX might be the better cleaner to use, but using DC1 will also improve things.

The thing to remember is that you can mix and match product lines with no problems.

So you might use the Clay, SwirlX, DC Polish, and NXt wax.

That was a foundational question - mixing and matching product lines. I hadn't picked up that it is really just fine. Now it is all much easier to plan! Thanks!!!

#21 is known to last a little longer (may just be opinions) so if you wanted you could use NXTv2 then top that with #21v2.

Yup, its ok to mix and match.

#21 2.0 and NXT 2.0 are both excellent products and very similar. I would just do two coats of one or the other. No need to buy two different products - unless of course you just want to try both.

FWIW, Meguiar's says NXT 2.0 is their most durable, best protecting sealant.
