  • HELP: APC on Steering Wheel

I was detailing my truck today because it was nice weather and I had lots of time. Since the steering wheel looked dull after I applied Hyper Dressing 3:1, I decided to clean it with APC 4:1. After I scrubbed it in and then rinsed off the APC the steering wheel was really dull and kind of white. So I kept on rinsing with no luck, I also applied 20 coats of the Hyper Dressing with no luck. The steering wheel normally has a coat on it that is shiney and has sheen and kind of looks wet naturally. Please Help!!!

Here is a picture of what the steering wheel looks like(Not My Steering Wheel)

Not really sure exactly about your situation. Could you take a picture of Your Own Steering wheel?

    20 coats That's a lot

I think you would have been better off with APC 10:1

Using 4:1 vigorously scrubbing may have not been a proper approach to the issue. but I don't think you could have removed some layer of sealant or clear coat type coating off of it?

Do you think I can fix the problem though?
I used a terry towel and I really did not scrub.

I'd have to see a pic. If it cannot be repaired you could always just get some Duplicolor vinyl paint spray and repaint it. I am just having trouble picturing your problem.

Well I think that is leather, so Hyper Dressing wouldn't be the product to use.

Do you have any dedicated leather cleaners or conditioners?

I do have leather cleaner. It is the Detailer Line one.
I am pretty sure though that it is not Leather. But coming from the Ford Expert Idk.?.?.?

Re: HELP: APC on Steering Wheel

From that picture there is something stitched to the steering wheel, so it could be leather. I am not sure if that is your exact wheel or not, but you could give it a try

Sorry for all of the Pictures.
I thought it was hard to capture the problem.
Hopefully the Pictures are of Help.
The dull non wet looking spots are what you are looking for or spots where it looks kind of whiteish.

This one shows it okay, it is near the Ford Emblem.

This one shows it near the "ON" Button to the left of it.

Re: HELP: APC on Steering Wheel

Sometimes, the dirt and grime from your hands can build up on spots that you frequently use on the steering wheel. In your case it looks like there is some buildup at 3 and 9 o'clock.

Does anything come off if you scrape it with a fingernail?

Ahhh, you mean the middle part! I was thinking the actual leather wrapped steering wheel portion. That middle section is a rubbery type material..something in-between rubber and plastic in touch.

I really don't know why APC would have harmed that- I used APC on stuff like that all the time.

I would have used M40 myself as the final step. Do you have M40?

*I will occasionally cut corners (shame on me) if I am using a rag with D180 (The Detailer line leather cleaner AIO you spoke of) and use it on plastics or surfaces like your wheel. I have noticed that it doesn't take well to some surfaces, and will leave an uneven coating. It appears that MIGHT be the case here?

Try starting from scratch and using APC 10:1 to gently remove the HYper Dressing and then re-treat it with M40.

Re: HELP: APC on Steering Wheel

I also thought you were thinking of the handle, not the center, It's not leather for sure.

                          hmm...

As computer keyboards get, grease and such can build up where you touch the most often. Using APC might have removed what was hiding it.

But from the pics, it looks as if something was rubbed off the material?

                          Weird....

                              Time to place an order

M40 is really awesome stuff for interior work. Hyper Dressing is AWESOME for engine bays, wheel wells, exterior trim for shows, and for tires...but M40 gets my nod for the interior.
