what does a magnified and illuminated linen tester do for looking at paint? Paul dalton uses it and im trying to figure out why?

We have tools like that at Meguiar's garage and they can come in handy sometimes, probably depends more if you're doing show car work or production work.
It might help you to decide to either tackle a defect or leave it alone.
Think Radio Shack can get these little lighted microscope type viewers...
Probably some science supply stores/websites too...

Been using that for quite a while (with LED backlight). Helps to assess scratches, surface contaminants and doing small paint touch ups.
There's another alternative - a USB magnifier for you CSI fans.Learning new things everyday

We used those daily in my old line of work - commercial print - to check for registration on press. Great tool for fine inspection of most any surface.Michael Stoops
