  • What do you call _____?

Every discipline has its own vocabulary. For those of us who are pretty ignorant about cars, leaning detailing vocabulary can be pretty challenging.

What do you call the following areas of the car:

    1) The plastic trim under the windshield--i.e., the plastic piece or grill which extends across the bottom of the windshield and surrounds the windshield wipers.

I have seen it referred to as the "cowl." What do you call it?

BTW, what is the "windshield surround"?

    2) The painted inside door areas.

I refer to it as the "door jamb." Is this correct? When the Brits refer to the "door shuts," are they talking about the jambs?

What is the difference between the "jamb" and the "sill"? Is the sill the bottom horizontal strip? Is it the non-painted insert?

    3) The painted inside trunk area.

I call this area the "trunk jamb." Is that correct?

    4) The interior ceiling.

    That's the "headliner," right?

    5) The flip side of the hood.

    "Underhood"?

Can you think of any special terms for parts of a car that we detailing newbs should know?

    Thanks.

    Cheers,
    Al

Re: What do you call _____?

    Hi, I'll have a go!!

    1) not sure of a common name for this but cowl seems reasonable.

    2) I would class it as the door jamb as well, I've never heard it called a 'door shut' before. I have heard the phrase shut lines in relation to the gap between door, boot(trunk), bonnet (hood) and body.

The sill/cill is the body panel at the bottom between the wheels. There will be an inner cill (hidden) and an outer cill (highlighted)

    4) Yes, over this side of the pond its called a headlining, so not too far off!

Trim around the windshield.? Like the chrome that goes around my windshield. That's the only thing that comes to mind.

            1. Cowl. A windshield surround usually refers to a rubber or metal trim piece that covers the circumference of the windshield area externally.

            2. Door Jamb (the Brits refer to all areas we call "jambs" as "shuts")

            3. The sill is the actual body moulding at the base of the frame which the doors cover when closed. The MOMO piece depicted in your photo is a "sill plate" or "sill cover" and is an add-on not an actual body piece.

            4. I've heard it referred to as "trunk jamb" here in the US and "boot shut" in the UK.

            5. Headliner

            6. In the automotive performance community we refer to things "underhood" (i.e. underhood chrome pieces or underhood artwork) as everything covered by the hood while closed...engine, body, trim, accessories, etc. In detailing forums I have seen it referred to as the underhood (i.e. "spray APC on the underhood area") as well. I think if you use that phrase people would know what you're referring to.

I call number one the windshield seal. I have a "cowl vent" on the hood of my Jeep and it has nothing to do with the windshield, but you guys could be right. I really don't know. All the other sound right. I say door jams and headliner also.

The cowl is correct for trim or even metal louvered area on older cars.

The trim around the windshield that fills the space between the glass and the Windshield posts or also called the " A " piller is called the Windshied revel mldg

The upward supports that conect the side of the vehicle to the roof are called pillers. the 1st piller at the wind shield is the " A " 2nd between the front and rear door is the " B " piller and the last is the " C " piller.

The side jamb area when including both frt and rear id called the Uni-side which is what is exposed when both of the doors frt and rear are off the car which includes hinge posts, rocker panels, pillers and quarter panel jamb.

I agree with your definitions, Al. As I was reading your post, I was nodding my head on everyone of them.

This would be the Rocker panel and is made of an inner and outer.

and sorry but the paint on the door is off in color from the fender and the quarter.

Hi ,I know. Its not actually that obvious in the metal and the paint is in good condition so not too much of a priority at the mo.
