  • Whats best for removing SPRAY PAINt off a cars paint?!

Someone decided to vandalize my cousins car and Spray paint all down the side of the car and the hood.
I work at a detail shop and buffed a little off already to see
BUT, my question is.. Is there any quicker way to take spray paint off?!
I wish I had PICS to post but I dont.
The car is a 96 Blue 4 door Acura and the spray paint is red.
Im already expecting to spend around 6-7 hours on buffing the whole car.

What other methods have you tried?

Claying takes off overspray quite well, but that's not as concentrated as a full spray on the surface. Possibly a more aggressive clay might do it? I reckon you have already tried this though.

Clay, or if your feeling real adventurous try wet sanding it off.

If clay does not do the trick, I would go with an abrasive; start with UC.

i got success with paint dots that got into the finish somehow along a construction site (white paint dots on red car) by using a generic mild rubbing compound on the "directly affected area only." masking the surrounding areas will definitely help alot in minimizing the "scratches" that will be induced. you can follow it up with a scratch remover of your choice. scratchx definitely helps a lot here.

just a bit of a detail, here are the steps that i have done
1 - wash the area that will be affected
2 - dry the area well and mask surrounding areas of the trouble area making sure that the area exposed is as little as possible
3 - using your damp terry towel, wrap it on the tip of you index finger and flick a little rubbing compound
4 - gently rub your way on the offending portion until the odd color is gone
5 - once its gone, wipe away excess compound with mf
6 - if there's too much excess compound, wash it off with your car wash
7 - using your scratch remover, work your way to a shiny finish

I would try out a solvent, the safest being plain rubbing alcohol. Next is a pre-paint product such as Prep Sol or Final Kleen.

Not for the faint of heart is laquer thinner, I keep a gallon handy for just such purpose. If it's factory paint that has some age, its generally safe (particularly clearcoat) to wipe on and wipe right off. You will have some rubbing time, depending on the paint characteristics, age, etc.; you have to use extreme caution.

You should test your technique on a hidden spot before attempting to use it anywhere else. It can dull the finish so you will probably have to use something like M3 or M80 to bring it back.

If Clay doesn't work very well. Some old folks uses gasoline but I really don't recommend that. Its not good for the paint.

Just like seth said for the laquer thinner. use with EXTREME CAUTION.

Other idea's that I have heard:

              1. Body Solvent
              2. WD40
              3. Goo Gone
              4. Contractors Solvent

Or just continue with your buffing. It should work great.

Whatever you use, use it soon because the longer the spray paint sits, the more effort it will take to remove it.

                Good luck to you.
