Picked up a junk hood for $10. Time to practice!

Well, I stopped by a local junk yard this afternoon and found a pretty nice hood. Its red and from an early 90's Chevy pickup. Its oxidized and has its share of swirls, marring, and RIDS. I'll finally be able to practice with the rotary that I've had for 2 years. Can't wait. Just need to purchase some saw horses. I don't have anything I can improvise with. Darn.

Take some time to play around on the edges of this hood and see how quickly you can burn through it. Paint tends to flow away from edges as it dries so the paint is very thin there. When most people talk about burning through paint with a rotary, rarely is it right in the middle of a flat panel - you need to be doing something seriously wrong in order for that to happen. But spin a foam cutting pad at 1800rpm and have your attention lapse for a brief second and BAM - you've burned an edge.

When body panels don't quite line up, the probability of burning an edge goes sky high. Plastic trim, tail light lenses, etc are all targets for that oh so brief moment when you're concentrating a bit too much on the spot your trying to correct and lose sight of your surrounding areas.

We tape things off when working with a D/A just to prevent build up in the crevices. We tape off when working with a rotary to protect things!

I'm lucky...I get panels for nothing.

You'll get a lot of enjoyment out of the practice,because you know it's not something to worry about. So you can go nuts

I've been doing work on painted plastic. If you can spare another $10,get a painted plastic panel and see how your technique goes with heat build up.

Mike S, thanks for the info. I'll play around with burning through. It will be nice knowing I can take chances and test things out without damaging something of value.

Eddie, nice tip on the plastic panel. After reading some of the threads about paint wrinkling, I'll have to pick up a plastic panel and test things out.

I wonder if there are very narrow tapes designed for edges.

What I do is I tilt the pad at an angle to avoid burning through the edges... but that is very tiring.
