  • The final layer, NXT -cleaner?

Ok, so i want to apply Duragloss 105 sealant, and then NXT over it. I called meguires, they say it has no cleaners and it is fine. I look online and get mixed reviews. I am looking for a final verdict...
can i apply NXT over sealant?

I would not. NXT does have some very mild cleaners. If you're looking for a wax with which to top DG 105, then consider M26 Yellow Tech Wax.

Not debating my good friend Al, I thought that NXT has some slight cleaning capabilities as far as bonding goes, not enough to worry about layering over a pure polish.....At least not in waxes like Cleaner Wax, ColorX, M66 or M06 or M19 for that matter......

Any cleaning ability found in NXT Tech Wax 2.0 is inconsequential - we classify it as a polish/wax and not a cleaner/wax. Not even close. You should be able to use it without issue over the Duragloss.

I do not disagree with you, Aaron. You have a lot more experience with these matters than I!

Yet I still would not top DG 105 with NXT, especially if I were concerned about durability, as many of us increasingly are as winter draws near. DG 105 is a sealant. NXT is a sealant. Why top one with the other? I understand the idea of topping a sealant with a carnauba. As the theory goes, one gains both the longevity of sealant protection and the warmth and depth of carnauba wax. But what if the carnauba in fact compromises the durability of the underlying sealant? I posed the question of topping to Duragloss earlier this year, and I was told, by the President of the company no less, that the carnauba topper might well affect the durability of Duragloss's sealants. Hence my reservations about applying NXT on top of DG 105. NXT's cleaners may be ever so slight, but why chance it?

Personally, I think one should simply find a wax or sealant one likes and go with it. When it starts to fail--or even better, before it starts to fail--apply a fresh coat.

But ... having said this, I want to acknowledge that the issue is so minor as to be inconsequential. I'm all in favor of experimenting with various waxes and sealants. All of us should feel free to try out any combination of protectants that intrigue us. After all, what's the worst that can happen? It's not as if the paint is going to fall off our cars. Automobiles are not delicate and fragile creatures. Even if the protectant were to fail half-way through winter and even if the weather prevented us from applying a fresh coat, my car will survive just fine. So if the OP really wants to top DG 105 with NXT ... then I say, GO FOR IT!

          Cheers,
          Al

Re: The final layer, NXT -cleaner?

            Thanks for your responses.
I am trying to determine the best application with the most longevity and strength as i am trying to prep my car with winter.

I live in mn, and the weather here in the winter is VERY harsh on cars. I was hoping to provide my vehicle with more protection then just a wax (NXT). I am looking for the strongest (able to stand up to the horrid amounts of salt and below zero temps), and would like it to last if possible for 2 months, that way i only have to reapply twice during the winter season. (I do not have a heated garage, so the less strain i need to put on a friend in their garage- the better).

So in my research, this is what i was told to do:
            Paint Cleaner - Duragloss #601
            Sealant - Duragloss #105
            Wax - Duragloss #951

Now i know that NXT lasts longer than the duragloss, and i have it on hand so i assumed it would be an smart sub.
More comments are really welcome, thanks for the info guys!

If durability is a big deal for Twin City winters, maybe you should use Collinite 476S. I used that on my Explorer last winter and was impressed it was still beading water 6 months later. I don't think it looks quite as good as NXT on paint, but it will last.
