  • How bad is this?

I've had this car for about a year and I wash it with only Meguiar's products but have found that the car was extremely neglected by it's previous owner when it came to detailing. I've been trying to mod the car for performance, but I can't stand to put money into making it go faster when it looks like crud up close.

Here's my biggest issue. The hood, looks to me like either extreme oxidation or delamination of the clearcoat. However it is really just hazy in person, not white like it shows in the picture. I took the pictures at noon when the sun was directly above me which I know is a no no when it comes to photography. But in lesser light conditions it is just faded looking and looks much less extreme after a fresh wash which is obviously needed. Which I will hopefully get to this weekend after getting it back from the mechanic after a long 3 and a half month wait.
    Here's the pics.

That is one abused paint finish, !

Sadly, that hood needs nothing short of a re-paint. That is clear coat failure in a fairly late stage in the whitest areas, and it is getting there in the surrounding areas.

As Mark points out you have a pretty advanced case of clear coat failure (clear coat delamination as you worded it) and there is no way to fix it except to strip and repaint.

Once the bond between clear and color coats starts to fail, whatever the reason and whether from the top of the clear down or right at the bond between the two coats, nothing will stop it. All kinds of things can make it look a little better but the effect is very short lived - a few days at most.

Yeah, it sounds like you plan on putting some money into the car. Whether to do that or not and how much money is up to you (and it's probably wiser to just save it up to put towards a new car eventually), but if you do plan on doing some modifications, consider a re-paint. Not only would it get rid of this problem and look real nice, it would also give you a clean slate to detail on.

Yea I went through with the usual wash, clay, paint cleaner, and wax. All were meg's products but still no better, however the rest of the car looks great. until I realized the roof and rear bumper are starting to do the same as the hood. I knew when I got the car it was too good to be true. Oh well
          Thanks guys.

Look like a job for MAACO, just ask them to put enough paint on so you can get it where you want it finish wise. I think they are running a special right now for $279.00

I think that's the first time I've ever heard anyone recommend maaco. LOL but thanks, I figure as long as they can shoot the paint for me it won't be a problem. I'll be doing the prep work.

Yea, I hear the only thing about maaco paint jobs that makes them bad is the prep work. So I figure if I know the prep work is done correctly since I know it's the most important part, then they cant be that bad. I mean laying the paint is the easiest part. I'd do it myself too if I had a Clean Room and a gun.

Not bad at all. Of course finding a guy that knows what he"s doing to lay some paint will be the trick.
