  • Solution for scratches/Cloudies on Samsung LCD Shiny Frame?

Hey guys, I was googleing for a solution, and that's how I get to here. Seem like a lot of you are very helpful! Here is my problem:

I bought a samsung p2450h and the back of it looks like this:

as you can see, it is the shiny Piano Red-Black kind of plastic. I find out there are some scratches on the back of the monitor on those shiny kind of plastic. Those scratches look very narrow, I cannot even see there is "deeper" at any angle. I think it is something because of the manufacturing process. I am working in Japan now and it is hard to return a product because of scratches over here, so I just have to deal with it myself.

Honestly I think I am very stupid. I am stupid enough to use Nail polish remover to see if I can clean up the scratches. The result is that area look kind of "cloud". The surface is still smooth, and still can reflect like a mirror, but there is like some white thing, or I can say cloud little bit under the surface. I guess a layer of the surface material has changed because of nail polish remover.

Then I am even more stupid to apply toothpaste to see if I can clean it up, and result is the same, some cloud looking thing form.

The scratches are still there, and the result is I just all more "clouds" looking things on it.

I search over internet and see people talking about using some "plastic polish" kind of solution can solve the problem. Does that work? Or it would make it worse?

I hope someone can help me out, this really make me feel sad for two days.

I find out these meguiars products may help. Which one would be better for my case?

    Plast-X

    or

    Plastic Cleaner / Polish

    Thanks!

Um... well, the scratches might be helped. Hard to say how much damage the acetone did, or how deep it might have gone. Dont know if that can be fixed. Maybe improved.

I could see trying PlastX, or even #105 Ultra-Cut Compound. Of course use a soft cloth, or smooth foam applicator, and try a small test spot first.

Or hang this thing on a wall.....

Thanks, I think I am lucky that I use a pretty expansive nail polish remover so it looks like just the coating surface has some clouding on it. I think if the toothpaste has same effect, should not be too deep, at least not deep on the real color part on the bottom. I hope my thought is right! Seem like PlastX is more powerful than the "plastic clean/polish", I will give PlastX a try! I am going to try it out at night time here, hope it works!

It is a paint cleaner, but the micro-abrasives in it seem to work on many materials.

Of course I would only start with a small test spot, not just wipe it over the whole thing.

Is that a product of meguiars?
Would the ScratchX 2.0 work better?

Yes. Though may be harder to find in Japan, esp in a small size.

I mean, PlastX is a good thing to try first. If it doesnt do it, and you need more things to try before giving up, then #105, ScratcHX 2.0, etc, etc can be tried.

Thanks. How about comparing Plast-X and "Plastic Cleaner / Polish"?

Re: Solution for scratches/Cloudies on Samsung LCD Shiny Frame?

PlastX is stronger than the #17 Plastic Cleaner.

Of course, depending on the results, sometimes a mild product can help.....

Plastic is definatley tricky to work with.

Thanks, why do you say it is number 17?

Actually are a staff of Meguiars?

Is "Ultimate Compound" a good choice? Sound like it is like super high tech. I guess it is even stronger than scratch 2.0...

I thought you might be refering to this one:

As far as Ultimate Compound.... again, it is something you could try, if PlastX isnt doing it. The kind of abrasive that UC, #105, ScratcHX 2.0, and SwirlX have seem to work well on a variety of materials.

However, I think trying each of those would be a bit crazy.... just hang it on a wall.

Ho...I was talking about the cleaner from meguiars....

This is not as strong as plastx right?
