  • Is washing too much bad?

I just got a new car 3 days ago. So far ive washed it twice. After every drive, even for 10 minutes, when I park and get out, I see salt and dirt all over the car, and i drive on dry roads. So my question is, will washing it all the time be bad for the paint? I use the 2 bucket method with 2 grit guards, and microfibers to dry it. Soap i use is either gold class or nxt. Also, I waxed it but about 2 - 3 hours later it snowed, should I reapply the wax or will it be okay? I used NXT wax.

Anytime you simply "touch" the paint you run the possiblity of marring or scratching the paint..and that means even simply touching the paint with your microfibers...

the whole thing about NXT needing 12 hours to cure is only for "maximum" protection. NXT is a very durable sealant. if it only had 2-3 hours curing time, i really wouldnt worry about it. your wax is still there and its really not anythign to worry about..however if you would like to reapply, just wash the car and reapply a second coat of NXT and your good to go.

washing all the time isnt bad, of course with proper technique that is, which is what you have stated you do (ie. 2 bucket method, grit gaurds)..but just remember, every time you touch the paint you run the potential of scratching the paint, now that doesnt meant everytime you touch the paint you will scratch the paint, it only means anytime you touch the paint, you have the potential to scratch..but of course if your very careful with your car, you dont have much to worry about. just keep it clean !

Also dont forget, after you wash your car, you can maintain it with Ultimate Quick Detailer, Last Touch, or any other quick detailers..wash the car one day, and then the next day when it is a little dust, use UQD to safely wipe off all the dust and debris that may be laying on the paint..the hydrophic polymers in UQD, when sprayed onto the car, entrap themselves all around the dust and dirt particles so that when you go to wipe them off, you have proper lubrication and will not scratch the paint, and of course handle your microfibers softly and dont rub the paint hard...but if the dirt has built up too much (for example you hit a mud puddle), then you would want to procede with a regular wash. Dont worry too much about washing so often, if you have to, then you have to..the longer you let fresh contaminents lay on the paint, the more of a chance they have to bond to the paint and then claying will required, justy use proper technique and keep it simple and be gentle, and you'll be fine

well anyway james, now that ive taken up an hour of time reading this, im ganna get back to class lol

You should be fine since it sounds like you're using the right tools and proper technique when washing. Your typical swirl marks basically come from touching the paint, so the less you touch it the less chance you have of creating new swirls. How scratch sensitive your paint is will play a huge roll in how easily it gets marred

After a short 10 minute drive on dry roads, though, you shouldn't have much more than dust on the surface. You might want to try just a good wipe down with some UQD and a few microfiber towels to remove that dust. Read through this article to find out more about maintaining a finish over time without inflicting swirls in the process.

As for that coat of NXT just before it snowed - you're fine. But if the car is taken out on wet, salted roads and it really gets dirty, just keep in mind that salt is really nasty stuff and will likely penetrate your wax, any wax, fairly quickly. Getting that salt off the paint is paramount.

Michael hit it square on the head.

The correct use and the proper tools and you should be fine. The biggest concern is small particles leaving micro scratches and swirl marks but if the finish is protected by a sealant and a good coat of wax then wash away.....carefully..

thats really bad in my case, i can not wash my truck due to carnage from an accident and blowing plastic all over heck if hit with any pressure of water,, so UNFORUNTALY, my truck hasnt seen a wash since before dec 20th. its grungy too!

Thats ok, once its out of the body shop (goes in feb 8) im going to pick up some fresh paint safe products and go to town on it in my garage and try to rejuvenate the paint and get some protection back on it!
