Gold Class Carnauba Plus Paste Wax - hard to apply

hey guys,

as a liquid wax user, ive never found much luck with paste wax...however, i was at walmart a couple days ago and saw the new carnuaba plus wax for 9.99..so i said, hmm...ill get it. i was able to pick up the paste version so i said you know what, ill give paste a try again...

today in NJ we had a much warmer day than what we have been having lately..todays high was 50*F

so i immediately hopped on that and gave my car a good bubble bath, it needed it bad !! so i decided to give GC CP a try..the paste wax was sooooo hard to spread thin, heck, even spread at all...i ended up getting the car done but i wish it could have been easier. i did this by hand by the way...i thought about it later on and realized, the temperature at the time i waxed my car was somewhere around 45*F to 50*F. id assume the surface temp of the paint was colder...i was confused because with liquid wax, the temperature wasnt so much of a big deal as far as evenly spreading the wax goes. with the paste, i had such a hard time. i realized its because the liquid wax is, well...already liquid. the paste wax is more towards a solid and the cold temperature only makes it more solid. im going to give it a try again in the summer time where the wax would melt a little more and become more creamier. what do you guys think ? just a temperature issue ?

thats what i figured..the paste wax kept getting "stuck" is the only way i could put it..it wouldnt drag and work across the paint easy at all..im sure the heat in the summer time would make the paste much more creamier thus spreading much more easily

I used the new GC carnauba a couple weeks ago, paste version also, and had no problem with it. I could actually get it so thin you could barely tell if it was there unless you looked from a certain angle. This was on the truck in my avatar..dark color I mean, not the wax job in that specific pic. Also, this was a topper to NXT 2.0. I was in a garage at 60 F

I would say the surface paint temperature had a lot to do with your difficulties.

Temperature most likely played a huge role here.

If you're new to applying paste wax, here's a tip or two for getting a nice, thin coat applied:

Here's a fresh, but fairly old, can of Cleaner Wax - the light cracking is perfectly normal but also tells you this can has never been used. Whether you're using Cleaner Wax, Gold Class Carnauba Plus, NXT Tech Wax 2.0, M26, M16 or any other paste wax, here's the way to use it.


Now fold your applicator pad into a bit of a taco shape, with your thumb and middle finger supporting the sides and your index finger being the meat in the taco. (lettuce, cheese, peppers, olives and anything else you normally fill your taco with should be avoided in this scenario)


Using very light pressure so that you're just grazing the pad against the surface of the wax, "spin" the pad quickly against the wax. This will pick up a small amount of product but also lightly soften the paste wax, making it a bit more liquid on the pad.


What you get is a small amount on the pad, and just a lightly noticeable smearing of the surface of the product in the can. This small amount will go a surprisingly long way on your vehicle.



Spread this out and use the same process to pick up more wax as needed. The face of the pad will start to become more widely covered with product as you go, just remember that if you can spread a uniform coating onto the paint, you really don't need to pick up much wax at all to continue. Never scoop wax out of the can - it's darn near impossible to spread a thin coat when you've picked up a huge lump of wax. When you've covered the whole vehicle and you look back into the can of wax, it should appear as though you've hardly used any at all.

When your ambient temperature warms up a bit give this another shot. Gold Class Carnauba Plus should spread like warm butter and feel really creamy going on. A nice thin layer should be easy to achieve, and it will dry quickly and wipe off with almost no effort.

There is a similar thread from Mike Phillips regarding M16 applicator technique. I think Mike P. used the "insert pad into tin flat and spin" to get a good amount on the pad and liquify the pad a bit.

Some manufactures will have you use a damp pad to apply the wax to, I know Collinite suggests this for 476s, perhaps because it is a very hard wax to get moving. Everything from Megs seems to liquify much better than Collinite.

Ahh okay. That's the same way I collect the hot rims mag polish. I never thought to do the same with paste wax...oh darn. Well its alright I did get the wax the whole car and gc cp wax made it really dark black. I will be sure to try this technique in the future. Thanks mike!

Had the same experience. Easy to apply. Used as a topper to TechWax 2.0. Amazing result!

Mike Stoops, i went ahead and tried this again but with the technique you showed me and all i have to say is, im totally impressed.

look at how thin i was able to apply it !!





1 spin in the can was enough to wax half of the hood. you were right, spinning your pad in the can does more liquify the wax, the wax has a "melted" look to it and makes it warm like butter to apply just like you said. i was using the totally wrong technique for a paste wax. im not afraid to admit my mistakes, they only make me smarter in the end. i was taking my foam pad and just dabbing the top of the paste. i wasnt actually scooping anything up as you do when you spin the pad. i can honestly say, as a die hard liquid wax fan, i think im going to convert to paste !

That's just awesome Speed3, glad it's working for you now!!! That is a properly thin coat of wax you've got there.

i wasnt actually scooping anything up as you do when you spin the pad.

Careful about that word "scoop" though, as you really aren't "scooping" anything out. In fact, it's usually when people literally "scoop" wax out of the can that they apply it waaay to heavy.

i know i know. i just couldnt think of any other word other than "scoop" i was just sort of hoping you'd know what i meant. probably a better term for that is that your shaving a thin layer of a wax off of the block of wax. but point is, i get it now

im really enjoying working with paste wax now. i used to just use my with liquid wax, but honestly, with how easily this paste wax can be applied and how little it takes, i dont even mind working by hand ! i had the hood covered in a minute ! oh and by the way, gold class carnauba plus really takes little to no time to dry !
