I was cleaning black leather seats in an 05 ford escape this past weekend. I used APC plus 4:1, terry cloth, and a bristle brush. These seats have never been cleaned/treated since new, now at 78K miles. Every time I wiped the seat, it came off black, but never reduced in color or amount. I stopped cleaning, thinking I was removing dye...or were the seats really this nasty!! After cleaning, the seats were very dull looking, but after using Meg's gold class leather cleaner/conditioner, the color looked normal and the seats were nice and plush feeling, not hard and dried like before. So, was this dye or grime?

Any chance of pics? Sounds like it was probably just dirt, and was just less noticeable with black. Some pics would help.Shane

I didn't take any pics. I am going to do a FULL interior/exterior detail/paint correction in the near future. We finally had a decent weekend (60's), so I just did a quick interior/exterior to do a quick spring cleanup to make it easier. Like I said in first post, the amount of black "stuff" didn't seem to become less, even after four to five cleanings. Hard to say without pictures or being there with you. We had a customer call our Customer Care Center a while back complaining that one of our leather products was taking the dye off her black leather seats. The car was several years old and the seats had never been cleaned, so we figured it was just the product doing its job and pulling the dirt out. She wasn't so sure, but then mentioned that she had another car with tan leather interior, also a few years old that had never been cleaned. So we had her try the same product on that car. Yep, her towels looked exactly the same after working on the tan leather as they did on the black leather. Needless to say, she was a bit surprised and embarrassed, but at least she knew the product was just doing its job!
We would recommend this, however: if you're going to use APC on leather you should probably dilute it 10:1 rather than 4:1, just to be on the safe side.Michael Stoops
