  • car cover?

Just bought a 2010 Camaro that will not be a daily driver, more of a weekend toy. It will be parked in an uncovered driveway.

I've thought of covering it with a quality cover, but I've heard stories of folks having the covers bond to paint when sitting in the sun for extended periods of time. It also seems to me like pollen and dust will make it's way under the cover and over time, this may act like sand on the paint when the cover is blown by the wind.

I guess this isn't really a "detailing" question, but we could say it is, since I'm trying to avoid swirls.

Also, seems like when it would be rained on and then dried by the sun, this seems like a sure way to induce mold and mildew onto the paint, and even worse, inside the car.

    Thoughts?

If you get a high quality car cover that is the right fit for your car, and strapped down, there shouldnt be too much damage from it moving around. More of the siwrls would be from taking it on and off, and having to make sure the car was clean before you put it on.

I have a Covercraft one that I have used if away for a few weeks, and all is well when I take it back off.

I had this problem over the winter with my car cover. I kept trying to figure out how all these swirls were being instilled and realized that it must have been the car cover mixed with an unclean car. Always make sure to have a clean car cover and a clean car.

        Re: car cover?

Car covers can be a double edged sword. There are excellent covers on the market that are actually fairly weatherproof and allow almost no dust through them. Even when rained on and allowed to self dry, the car underneath still looks virtually untouched - provided it was near perfect when the cover was first put over it.

What becomes a bit of a pain is the need to wipe down the car thoroughly with a quick detailer and microfiber towels every time before you put the cover on. For a car that's not a daily driver, that's less of an issue perhaps.

What is critical, however, is how you take the cover on and off the car. Some videos by cover manufacturers show them pulling up each corner and folding it back onto the car, then basically just rolling the thing up. That tends to bring the outside face of the cover into contact with the inside material, and transfer dirt from the outside to the inside. Not good. But if you pull the front edge up to about halfway along the length of the car, and then do the same with the back edge so that it meets the front edge, you've just got outside to outside contact. You can then fold the cover in half and only have inside to inside contact, and continue folding this way until it's manageable and can be stuffed into a carry bag. Of course, you then need to be very careful when placing it back on the car so that you perform the above operation in reverse order.

Keep in mind that with the car sitting outside for prolonged periods of time, the outside of that cover can get pretty dirty, so the above process is critical.

My cover has been on my Olds since November, I pulled it off last week to check on it (itscoming out of storage to be fixed tomorrow) and its still mint. Not scratches, no dust and my wax seems to still be very entact. I UQD'd it before I covered it and probably washed and waxed it only a few weeks before that.

I bought my cover from a custom car cover manufacturer in NJ, I told them what kind of car I have and they had one that fit like a glove. It cost me ~$150. It's a 5-layer outdoor cover and when its secured with rope and the metal wire given, it hardly moves inmy windy driveway (even during the worst winter storms). I can't wait to clean and drive my car again

            Re: car cover?

Best advice I can give regarding car covers? Don't attempt to stretch the cover over your door mirrors, even if you have a custom fitted cover designed for your make and model with mirror pockets. Guaranteed you will not only swirl or scratch the paint on the mirror housing, but also other areas of the car as well.

Fold the mirrors in, then put your cover on. It also makes for a quicker operation whether you're putting the cover on or taking it off.
