  • NXT 2.0 Residue?

About 5 weeks have gone by since I put my first coat of NXT 2.0 on my vehicle. The last two times after washing the car I noticed a sort of residue remaining on the finish after drying. Went over the car with some QD and it still remains. It feels like the consistency of freshly applied wax when I run a finger across the paint. I have been hesitant to do any hard buffing or wiping for fear of scratching the finish. I don't know if it's the NXT 2.0 or possibly the mud/dirt film that collects here in San Antonio, or a mixture of the two.

Any suggestions on how to effectively remove it? Is it clay bar time?

I am also hesitant on using the NXT 2.0 again, I used 1.0 several years ago and stopped using it but wasn't sure why, now I think I remember. Any suggestions or insight would be much appreciated.

I have never heard of this happening with NXT or any other wax. Is the consistency of the film you feel merely the slick finish left behind by NXT 2.0?

You could try claying the car to remove the NXT 2.0 and give it another shot. Do you have any pics? They could really help us understand and properly help you through this.

If it was dirt, you would feel bumps, similar to an extremely high grit sandpaper. If this is what you feel then I would definitely clay and try again.

Final question, what car wash are you using? The film very well could be soemthing left behind by the wash.

Whatever is on your finish is repairable if it is not supposed to be there, so no worries!

It's not dirt or dust per say, though it may possibly be a slight film of mud, when it rains here in San Antonio the ground can't hold the water so a very slick sort of mud is made, could be that, although the car is not discolored, it's very odd.

I'm using Gold Class Car Wash.

Not even sure if I could pick it up on camera, it really is just the slightest of films, though when you run your finger across it it smears ever so slightly.

That is interesting. You could try washing the car again except leave the soap to soak on the car as long as possible (without letting it dry) to see if the film can be removed.

If you really want to strip the surface of the NXT 2.0 then take some APC of some kind (if Meguiars APC, then 10:1 or 15:1) and dilute it well. Spray each panel with the cleaner, let it soak for about 30 secs (do not let it dry) and then wash the panel as you would the rest of the car with GC soap, then rinse and then dry. Do this for each panel of the car. Then, wait to see if the film appears again. If it does then you know it is not the wax but something in the environment around you creating the film. I think doing it this way will narrow down what exactly is causing this problem.

You said you noticed the residue after drying. What are you drying the car with, and how are you cleaning that drying tool?

Sounds like my issues with the wax not drying completely before removal.

As Coop said, it's not an undoable situation. I'd clay it and then reapply. Clearly, there's something clinging to the paint surface, and it doesn't possess the properties of NXT 2.0. The contaminants may be pre or post waxing. In any event, the cleanly clayed surface will definitely remedy things for you. My brother in law lives in Boerne and it's a mudhole. I think a clay cleaning is in order anyway. The resulting surface should be smooth and slick following your addition of the claying procedure.

5 weeks on, even if you applied half the bottle of NXT in one go, there's just no way it could still feel wet or like a fresh film of just applied wax.

This is sort of what we're thinking as well. Any chance you're using a terry cloth towel that has been washed and dried with either a fabric softener or dryer sheets? If so, there's a high probability that the residue from the softening agent is leaving a film behind.

Using a waffle weave microfiber towel. Haven't washed it yet, though I've only used it a couple of times.

What kind? Where is it from? Have you used this towel on other cars as well?

well I first started to use NXT 2.0 I may have been putting it on to thick and not allowing it dry and I would get the appearance of oil smears as I wiped it off and they would remain until I washed again.
I would wash your car again and see if its still there. As a tip the next time you apply NXT put it on so thin its crazy, once your applicator pad is wet from the first few panels you will almost not have to apply any more product to your pad.

Also ensure you are shaking up your bottle of wax very well at the start and continously during waxing.

I was also thinking along these lines. Sounds like the film is from the fabric softener.
